Nissan entering commercial van market in 2010

08/25/2008, 9:29 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Nissan has announced that it will offer a full-size commercial van in North America in 2010. To be produced at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi, plant, the new commercial vans will compete directly with ford, GM and Dodge.

Nissan says that more details will be released at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The automaker’s vans are expected to resemble the European-style commercial vans currently sold by Dodge (Sprinter) and soon to be sold by Ford (Transit Connect), rather than the traditional V8-powered, heavy-duty vans like the Chevrolet Express and the Ford E-Series. Nissan currently produces large commercial vehicles like the LCV (pictured).

Don’t bother me until there’s a Spec-V in the works.

I guess they’re hoping that this new “small van” market will really take off… what with Transit Connect being brought over and all. It’ll probably be a rebadge of a european model too.

I see the Dodge Sprinter vans everywhere. Wonder if Nissan will have the “manual CVT”? How stupid is that? Manual paddle shifters on a gearless automatic trans?

I don’t understand what is wrong in the world of transmissions today. They either have too many gears… 7-speed, 8-speed… CVT (infinite)… or too few like the 4-speed auto that GM can’t seem to let go. 5 is good… 6 is better. Manual > auto… forget these stupid “sport-tronic” or whatever they are called. Give me a clutch over a computer any day.

RaineMan, the problem is that certain people have trouble shifting while doing more important things, like chatting on the phone, eating, putting on makeup, drinking coffee, texting, etc.

These nissans are actually going to dominate the market imo. They will come with either isuzu 7.2 inline 4 diesels, a cummins, or a mercedes diesel. I’m going to be working at the lone distributor in western Canada and concidering I work at a GM dealership that offers the medium duty line I definatly think they are going to be making up for gm short commings, also GM is looking to sell off their medium duty so their will be a market.
