Nissan GT 2012 business plan reveals future plans, confirms Infiniti G37 convertible and “mini SUV”

05/13/2008, 12:32 PM

By Drew Johnson

Earlier on Tuesday, Nissan unveiled its new business plan — dubbed ‘Nissan GT 2012′ (G for Growth and T for Trust) — which outlines the company’s goals through the year 2012. While the future market outlook is less than ideal, Nissan has set some pretty ambitious targets, and even revealed a couple of future models.

The Nissan GT 2012 plan will rely on three pillars: quality leadership, zero-emission vehicle leadership and a five percent revenue growth on average over five years. The plan also calls for 60 all-new models in the next five years and the release of at least 15 new technologies per years starting in 2009.

On the zero-emissions vehicle front, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says that the U.S. and Japan will see the first Nissan-badged electric vehicles in 2010, with the rest of the world following in 2012.

The report — which also included plans for Nissan’s Infiniti division — revealed that two new models will be bowing in the fiscal year 2008. Ghosn officially announced that Infiniti will be getting a drop-top version of the G37 coupe. However, it remains unclear if the new model will feature a conventional soft top or a retractable hard top unit.

Perhaps a little more interesting, the report also states that the Japanese automaker will be launching a “mini SUV” this year. The report didn’t specify if the new baby SUV would wear an Infiniti or Nissan badge, but it would seem that the mini SUV is likely the premium small car Infiniti is developing. Whatever the case, all should be revealed by the end of the 2008 fiscal year.

I love it when companies get all cutesy with pet names for their growth strategies. Just build the f*cking cars and get on with it. Trust me, nobody outside your executive washroom really gives a sh*t.

As if the G37 isn’t heavy enough as it is …

I hope they have a weight-loss program for it! Or it’s going to be really really hard to call it a performance-oriented car.

The G37 is selling very well, so I’m not surprised that a drop-top is in the works. I agree with the post above about it being porky as-is, and this won’t help.

The “small SUV” is not the EX35, since that’s already been released. Infiniti already has two SUVs, so I hope they haven’t dropped their small sedan plans (sub-G35) to focus on becoming an all-SUVs-to-all-people maker.

make it a rag top, these hard top convertibles are stupid. They look like awkward versions of their coupe counterparts. Yes they have more practicality, but traditional ragtops look the part so much better when there is a coupe counterpart. Cars designed from the outset with a retractible hardtop are perfection (SL-class, Eos, C70, XLR)… but when it is second place to the coupe – aka 3-series or the G6, it looks nowhere near as good. If youre going to cut the top off an existing coupe, make it a ragtop.

The G35 and G37 are the cheapest by a huge margin to their nearest competitors when compared feature to feature. It’s no suprise that they’re selling well.
