2008 is predicted to a down year for the auto industry, and this year is already having an impact on some automakers. Nissan announced on Thursday that it will be idling its Aguascalientes, Mexico plant due to falling U.S. demand.
The plant — which makes the Nissan Sentra and Versa for the U.S. market — will be idled for a total of seven days this month.
Nissan failed to mentioned how many fewer cars it would produce as a result of the shut down, but, according to Automotive News, the plant typically produces about 26,000 units per month.
The U.S. auto market slow down is expected to widely affect Mexico’s automobile industry.

Nissans were always sold on stying and performance. Styling has lost its way, and that performance comes with crappy mileage, which now makes a difference with gas over $3.
The Altima hybrid needs to stop being their best kept secret. Decent performance in a mid-sized stylish car getting close to 40mph? Why not in all 50 states, and stronger promotion?

You know.. I liked where they were going 3-4 years ago, but they got really conservative with their design, everything they’ve come out with recently has not impressed me at all. With the exception of the Altima, Id take that any day over a Camry. But besides all of that, **** sucks

Other than the GTR, which is new to these parts, every other new Nissan has become just a bloated caricature of the previous model. Their designs peaked with the original Murano and the 350Z, now they’re stalled and just cannibalizing their old ideas.

While I don’t support Nissan with their current design cues, I really don’t like the tone of “Need more oil for GM” (post 8). “Japcrap”? Are you stuck in a time warp? This isn’t the 70s or even the 80s. Burn your polyester leisure suit off, cut your mullet off and look at the world around you. Last time I checked, JD Power has GM at the same level as Nissan in initial build “quality” …

It’s not ‘japcrap’ any more, and hasn’t been in ages. Or unless you’re gonna say JD Power (Consumer Reports, what name you) is biased against American companies. This mentality you have is the very reason why the US car makes have the public’s current perception of inferior car building — complacency. Keep up with the Joneses (or maybe the Toyotas / Hondas of the world) or get passed. Heck — the European and Australian models made by GM is better than what you’re making here. What does that say about “Made in the USA”? Overall, GM is making great strides to win back the public but their image has been hurt with their subpar performance / looks the past couple decades. You’ve got the UAW on your side … now it’s up to you to catch up with the world.

Back to the topic at hand, it is somewhat surprising that Nissan is slowing production of their small car line-up for the US market. You’d think the bigger (read it: thirstier) cars would suffer. But as someone has already said … I’m surprised that those small cars (Sentra, Versa) don’t have as good fuel economy as their contemporaries. Plus, the design cue of the Versa … shall I say … quirky?
Ghosn has turned Nissan around. They’re #3 in Japan (slipped from #2) but I think they are headed in the right (overall direction). They’re behind in the race for alternative fuels but sharing their knowledge with Renault will help in the long run (or so they say).

What are you talking about? You totally took me out of context. I am talking about GM engineering / complacency by the Big3. Where did I say US workers aren’t up to snuff? I only mention ‘Made in the USA’ to counter the term ‘japcrap’ mentioned by “Needs more oil for GM”.
Americans can build great cars … they have been making great cars since Ford developed the assembly line. They lost their way around the 70s when they totally underestimated the imports. Then it became cost structure / complacency issues, but the UAW fixed the (labor) cost part of the equation … now GM (as well as Ford / Chrysler) has to step up and engineer / design cars people want to buy. GM can engineer such cars — look at what Holden and GM Europe are making. Now they have to bring those ideas / design cues here. That’s all I wanted to say in my last post.
And when does living in America such a big deal? I used to live there for a while and kinda happy I don’t any more. I’ve probably visited more places in the US than most of its own citizens. I know what it’s like and don’t miss it (outside of selection of goods). And everything you read / see / watch is from the US perspective. Even on LLN …

Datsuns’ problem is that with toyota and honda they have become almost needless. The audience that are most interested in buying japanese are mostly served by the feminine products of the two. Nissan had better grow some balls with the best of their products and stop playing with the girls.

In all honesty TSA is the dumbest agency in US arsenal of bureaucracy. If you look in Newark airport they all muslims with angry look and they love to shake down old jews. They would make gestapo proud.
Sorry for your trouble man. If you have say in it fly into Morristown airport or Princeton. It is not significantly further from the city, but I doubt they have TSA.

autonut, heard the same story from a charter pilot friend who flew from Aruba and decided to clear in Texas. Customs was fine, ( and if I was mistaken for implying that the customs agents we meet across the USA are responsible for the BS I apologize- they are good people sometimes forced to enforce paranoid delusions) but they had their aircraft seized for a week by the TSA because their passengers failed to produce some particular Visa. They all had passports and the aircraft was clean but apparently that wasn’t good enough. In defense of your country’s entry policy, however, they had been warned prior to the flight by their flight planners of this possibility but chose to ignore it. In a nutshell, however, it boils down to your country and their ‘war on drugs’. These were tourists- not some Colombian Cartel. The absolutely goofy part of all this is that if they had cleared in Cancun on their way back they could have overflown your continental US direct to Canada without incident. Go figure.

Johnny, I am not defending stupidity or bureaucracy of US. It is sometimes better or worse then in other countries. TSA is primarily concerned with terrorists, who have tendency to come onto continent via Canada. 19 out of 19 9/11 “heroes” came from north. As far as drugs concerned, most of large shipments on larger vessels come from Canada not from south. Really professional and organized cartels don;t try southern route. Those are left for small fries who does get caught now and then.

Autonut, surely you’re not implying that any of British Columbia’s finest ‘medicinal marijuana’ would ever find it’s way to American soil. Or that our cultural melting pot would provide safe harbour to those with less than honorable political ambitions due to our rather lax justice system.
My biggest concern is that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. What are we headed towards when it comes to the relationship between two of the so-called friendlier neighbor countries? I see what you’re doing in the border problem with Mexico. There seems to be a ‘wall’ of a different sort being built up North as well, yet all three countries call themselves trading partners. Good fences make good neighbors, but when the wall becomes so high you can’t see over it any more, that’s where the paranoia becomes dangerous.
