i dont get it, it seems like gm would be dead weight to nissan, what would gm do for nissan. maybe honda or bmw. but nissan Renault honda Alliance, would be good

A French takeover would do wonders for GM sales in the Midwest I’m sure.

One of GMs problems has been too many brands and partnerships so maybe a tieup with Renault/Nissan would get rid of Saab and maybe help out with Opel.

But probably what the Geniuses at GM are planning on doing is importing Renaults and rebadging them as Hummers.

Ironically Carlos Ghosn has been offered top jobs at Ford and GM motors but has declined both only last year saying the envioroment of both companies didn’t suit him and his style.

In other words he wouldn’t have shareholders (kerkorian) and the public checking, analysing and faulting his every move. He can’t make job and other cuts like he did at nissan. Only two men can help Ford and GM and thats Mr Ghosn and Mr Dieter Zetche.

This makes no logical sense for any of the parties. I’m a bit surprised Renault-Nissan didn’t outright deny it, which makes me think they’re actually considering it. The only things GM would get out of it are the possibility of acquiring Carlos Ghosn and better access to the Japanese market. Nissan and Renault might gain production capacity and the ability to lower costs through GM suppliers. But that was the big reason for GM-Fiat and it turned out to be a disaster (what did GM gain from it, the mirrors the Solstice/Sky?). The only conclusion that seems remotely feasible is Kerkorian is once again just being an ass.

Can anyone think of any reason why they would merge that made sense? Why would Nissan spend money on GM? I guess Nissan could use all the overseas GM companies in China and India and South America and Austrailia? What could they bring to the table other than a CEO? If that was so GM would just hire him. I guess if they combined they would have a large market share here in the US and could have more control and less competition by working together?

The Renault Nissan “alliance” seems to be working very well. I doubt if it were a true alliance Nissan would have allowed Carlos in to shut down plants and essentially run Nissan in Japan.

The guys at Nissan- renault are obviously good at giving general,non-falsifiable answers. The paraphrase I deem toi be somewhat like this: We are secretly engaged in talks over the matter and are already working on the framework for the deal.
Ford sure wouldn´t like that….
I trust in French ignorance and arrogance to prevent the Alliance from forming….
Referring to Ames, I find the term “Alliance” too weak…how about a more Republican-conservative-isolationist tone? The Axis of Shareholders^^

It makes sense for none of the partners, it only makes sense for that bastard Kerk and Tracinda shareholders. The Fiat tie up was a disaster for GM there is total product overlap in Europe with opel and Vauxhall. In the US Infiniti and Nissan compete directly with GM products. It makes no business sense.
