Geez and for 30 years, I have said Asian cars suck. If they start putting diesels in them, I guess I will have to change. I see nothing wrong with a nice powerful full size coupe/sedan/wagon getting 35-50 mpg. Diesels can be made very clean, it is just a matter of technology catching up.

It's amazing how ignorant virtually everyone on this post are.

The diesel smell, TOZO, is because of inferior AMERICAN diesel whose sulfur content was a filthy 500+ ppm.
As of Oct. 15th 2006, clean diesel is now required in the US (only 15 ppm).

Diesels get vastly superior MPG while at the same time have a ton of torque.

The VW Golf/Jetta gets an EPA city of 24 MPG for the gasoline version, and 38 MPG for the diesel.

38/24 = a 58% increase in MPG + vastly more torque!!!!!

As for performance, the 5000+ lbs VW diesel Toureg blows away the top of the line gasoline V-8 version by a full second in the quarter mile while still getting far better MPG.

And, it was an AUDI diesel that blew away all other gasoline race cars at Le Mans to take 1st place.

Now, lets look at reliability.
Diesels typically last 400,000+ miles before needing any major engine work. Most gasoline engines are lucky to make it half as far.

Using clean and renewable Bio-Diesel, which is inherently a better lubricant than petroleum diesel, will make diesel engines last even longer.

And TOZO, you're comparing a Renault diesel to the refined, high quality German diesels???
Why do you think Renault hasn't sold any cars in the US for decades?
Because they suck, just like Fiats.

Unfortunately, so far, the US has only gotten the entry level diesels.
Car companies need to wake up and import the more powerful versions they already make for the European market.

Even Honda, Toyota, and Subaru will bring diesels to the US in the next year or two, that will pass even California's strict emissions.

But, that won't help California anyway since California is a smog-pot even without cars.
Jealousy......NOT!!

People on here who dis California are just jelous we have the best weather, best landscape, best roads, etc... Jelous because most of you who talk down are angry you have to put up with 6 months of snow plowing while im walking around in a t-shirt and shorts. You gripe about smog laws... Aren't you guys slick enough to get someone to pass your car for you?? And even if you can't, as long as your ride is tuned correctly you can make 600hp and pass smog. Think before you type nonesense and stupidity.

So last year I'm in Europe and I'm driving this little NEW Renault Clio rental car. The engine can't be bigger than 2 litres. Diesel! Noisy as hell!!!!! New little car and little engine! If that's the engine Nissan wants to bring (from its Renault affiliate), it could just forget the idea right now.

haha please, aint got the money to live in california? and for the record, diesel trains use the most fuel per passenger (even if fully loaded) than any other form of transportation ever created.

i would rather breathe in smog in LA than live in shanty town, alabama.

Califorina is awesome...they regulations ARE annoying though and housing is WAY too expensive. However, a recent article said that if we swtiched to ethanol fuel about 185 more people a year would die from pollution, 125 of those being in LA alone!!! So strict regulations make sense.

@ Stuart
French diesel engines are at least as reliable as the german. The VAG TDIs are not very reliable at all (Not very refined either). I know many people that have had problems with their TDI engines. Both PSA and Renault have very good diesels.

Aphrocreame, I agree with you but if you had move there you wouldn't have a choice. California's emissions laws have frustrated me beyond words to say the least-- I can hardly find a car I want that I'm allowed to drive there. Yep, I'm picky and the US car market generally sucks.

I like diesels. I like turbocharged engines. A diesel Maxima and a GT-R are bound to piss off folks who'd rather eliminate the passionate passenger vehicle all together.
