[Live image update] Nissan NV200 commercial van

03/03/2009, 1:01 PM

By Drew Johnson

Nissan finally unveiled its NV200 at the Geneva Motor Show earlier today. The NV200 isthe first in a series of new commercial vehicles for Nissan, but it remains unclear if the U.S. will get a version of the van, which is set up for cargo and passenger-hauling capabilities, albeit on a smaller scale than commercial users in North America are used to.

The NV200 will be available in three configurations – van, passenger and combi. The van allows for the most cargo room, while the passenger version transforms the NV200 into a true MPV. The combi is a hybrid of the two.

The NV200 van will offer buyers 145 cubic feet of cargo volume, which is about 20 cubic feet more than a comparable Ford Transit Connect.

Based on the same front-wheel drive platform that underpins the Nissan Cube, the NV200 also promises to be an economical ride. Engine choices will include 1.6L gas engine making 108 horsepower and a 1.5L diesel powerplant generating 85 horsepower and about 150 lb-ft of torque.

Despite the NV200’s commercial intentions, it will be available with a number of convenience features, including Nissan’s Intelligent Key, power windows, ESP and an available rear-view camera – a first for the segment.

The NV200 will hit the Japanese market by mid-2009, with Europe slated to get the van by this fall. However, Nissan has not indicated the NV200 will be sold in North America.

Wonder if that thing will be able to get up a hill when fully loded. Not a lot of power for a cargo vehicle or MPV. Bet the handling is wonderful too.

They should have called this the Versa. Cargo vans are supposed to be ugly. What’s the Versa’s excuse?

With diesel it will move, not a rocket ship, but a cargo van. I doubt we will get it.

this car is Sex on Fire. The way that flowing beltline curves up after blending near seamlessly with the front wheelarch is pure poetry and something only the Italians could accomplish with that much grace.

I don’t know if this is sex on fire, but one of the show girls has red gloves one, the rest don’t. Is there happy ending in some visitor future? You get inside this van and get out happy and relaxed?

its a good looking van. If the Transit Connect is making it to this side of the pond, so should the NV line eventually…right? Wasn’t the whole idea that because GM will downsize its commercial and fleet operations and will focus on restructuring the consumer market section of the business that would free up the market for NIssan ot jump in with the NV and save the day?
