Nissan unveils NV2500 Concept

12/04/2008, 1:00 PM

By Drew Johnson

Nissan may be slowly exiting the light-duty truck segment in the U.S., but the Japanese automaker is moving full steam ahead with its lineup of commercial vehicles for the U.S. market. Following a teaser sketch released earlier this year, Nissan has officially unveiled its firs commercial vehicle concept.

Dubbed the Nissan NV2500 Concept, the box van was unveiled at an event at Nissan’s Technical Center in Michigan. The concept was slated to make its first public appearance at next month’s Detroit Auto Show, but that unveiling has likely been moved back to February’s Chicago Auto Show.

Based on a modified version of the Titan’s architecture, the NV2500 will slot between Ford’s upcoming Transit and larger commercial vans, such as Dodge’s Sprinter. The NV2500 wears Nissan’s corporate face and blends a bit of styling designed into its boxy look.

Although this example is technically a concept, it does hint at the versatility of the production NV2500.

Power for the road-going NV2500 — which will be the first of three Nissan Commercial Vehicles for the U.S. — will be provided by Cummings, with ZF in charge of supplying Nissan with transmissions.

The production version of the NV2500 will be produced at Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi plant, with sales expected to start in 2010.

I reckon Nissan smells blood of former big D2.6. Where is the value proposition over Sprinter, GMC Van or Ford full size vans? Or over Great American Trucks? Unless this thing cost less, what the point? Of course if Domestic 2.6 will be gone it will be only (next to Toyota) game in town.

With a little retro-fitting, this will make a great quadraplegic transit van.

I’m really suprised they’re looking to get into the “commercial” vehicle business. Like Borat said earlier, I guess Nissan figures the Big3 wont be around much longer so they’ll be the first to tap into the once former Detroit stronghold. F*** them, I hope it backfires and turns into a complete waste of their money.
