Nissan today released a teaser sketch of a forthcoming Infiniti crossover concept, due at the New York Auto Show in April. Although the sketch doesn’t show much, it makes it clear this concept will join the emerging crossover coupe segment, also occupied by the BMW X6 and X4, Volkswagen Concept A, and possibly a Land Rover model. Nissan says the concept will lead to a production CUV, which will arrive at the end of 2007.

Wow, what a teaser. How revealing. Are they serious? They could’ve put some more effort into it.

these crossover coupes confuse the hell out of me… Since when has there been a demand for a jacked up g35? How about making a RWD coupe around 25K with a 4 cylinder turbo engine? HELLO TO THE AUTO INDUSTRY…. EVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT????????
First thing I’d do with one of these jacked up coupes is slam the hell out of it… They better be RWD or AWD

Yea the wheel suck! Not a fan of the color scheme either. GM is going to eat this up, blah blah blah, looks like another snack for the Sky, lol.

If that’s all they’ve got, they have a at least a year before the design team builds a miniature clay model of the thing. Reminds me of a 280Z though… is Nissan going to follow Ford, GM, and DCX and get all nostalgic on us by remaking the old models?

Isnt the FX due for replacement in the next year or two? This is probably the new shape, since the original one is more a lifted car than an actual SUV.

From all the priliminary information dropped here and there over the last two years, I strongly believe that this is not a concept for a crossover coupe, but rather a small five passenger crossover that will be placed below the FX in the Infiniti line-up. The Infiniti CX (name may change before production) is intended to compete with smaller, less expensive crossovers like the Acura RDX, 2009 Volvo XC60, 2009 Cadillac BRX, 2009 Mercedes Benz MLK (name may change), and possibly a Lexus compact crossover based off the Rav4 platform. In essence, the CX will allow the next generation FX to grow into a more conventional three row seven passenger crossover wagon to compete with the Acura MDX, Cadillac SRX, next generation Lexus RX, Mercedes Benz ML, etc.

Gawd, I hope they don’t build this. Infiniti can’t survive another embarrassment. Besides, how does an ailing brand have the money to design stuff like this. You’d think that a company on the brink of disaster would just pack it up and go back to Japan crying and moaning.

I Blame Women theory:
Women buy more new cars than men.
Women like sporty looking cars.- not always true sports cars
Women like the implied safety of riding higher than normal cars (minvans, suvs, etc)
Enter the CUV coupe. I’m not chauvinistic- this is just my theory. Given these assumptions ,I can see some bean counter at the motor companies saying “hey this is a market that is untapped”.

well, if any of you have seen the recent Infiniti ads (and it was also on their website, but i cant find it now), they usually have that brush stroke sketch incorporated in. It shows the simple, elegant brush stroke design, and then the car is imposed on top. I seem to remember reading that thats how infiniti does its designs– they draw a little brush stroke sketch like the one above, and then they take that idea and develope the design into an entire car. Its pretty cool, because its gives the car a basic direction for a shape which the design can be focused on. I dont think there are a lot of other car companies that can turn their designs into three brush strokes and get such a cool shape.
