Today marks a mile-stone in Nissan history as the 3 millionth Altima rolled off the assembly line. The Altima, which is Nissan’s best selling name-plate, has been built in the U.S. since its introduction in mid 1992 as a 1993 model. All Altimas were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until 2004 when Nissan started producing additional Atlimas at their Canton, Mississippi, plant to meet increased demand. The Smyrna plant is still the main Altima plant, producing 750 Altimas day, and the Canton facility adds another 600 Altimas a day.
While the Altima sells in a very competitive segment, one that includes such heavyweights as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the Altima has proven itself as a worthy alternative and a key product for the Nissan line-up. Aiding in the Altima’s popularity is that it is available in a wide variety of configurations, from sedan to coupe, 6 speed manual to an CVT automatic and from high-powered V6 to hybrid. The news of the 3 millionth Altima comes on the heels of the July announcement that Nissan produced its 9 millionth vehicle here in the United States. Nissan has been assembling vehicles in the U.S. since 1983.
