Nissan produces 3 millionth Altima

08/10/2007, 11:43 AM

By Drew Johnson

Today marks a mile-stone in Nissan history as the 3 millionth Altima rolled off the assembly line. The Altima, which is Nissan’s best selling name-plate, has been built in the U.S. since its introduction in mid 1992 as a 1993 model. All Altimas were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until 2004 when Nissan started producing additional Atlimas at their Canton, Mississippi, plant to meet increased demand. The Smyrna plant is still the main Altima plant, producing 750 Altimas day, and the Canton facility adds another 600 Altimas a day.

While the Altima sells in a very competitive segment, one that includes such heavyweights as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the Altima has proven itself as a worthy alternative and a key product for the Nissan line-up. Aiding in the Altima’s popularity is that it is available in a wide variety of configurations, from sedan to coupe, 6 speed manual to an CVT automatic and from high-powered V6 to hybrid. The news of the 3 millionth Altima comes on the heels of the July announcement that Nissan produced its 9 millionth vehicle here in the United States. Nissan has been assembling vehicles in the U.S. since 1983.

Hey CTS, this just means you have 3 million dead, broken down altimas littering our roadways. Meanwhile you’ll never see a broken down GM car in your lifetime.

These are good cars. Nice style, good reliability, more fun to drive than some of it’s competitors. They are everywhere tho. Is it me or have they doubled in size since 93? Congrats to them.

Altima’s the best in this segment from the japanese big three, but middle of the pack overall.

Nissan did make the greatest japanese car ever, though

niti “3 million times better?” terrible math, and the Epsilon and W Body beat the living crap out of the altima.

jack, the Altima is too busy being fixed to meet that challenge.

So I guess it’s defeat by default?

In that segment prefer the current or upcoming Mazda 6 to the Altima. Must say, however, that the new Altima Coupe is one awesome looking car.

I still dont like teh option packaging on the Altima. If I want leather I must buy a $5k package with $3k of stuff I don’t want. That’s a bit too steep … would rather spend the 3k on somehting else.

Still, congrats to Nissan and the American workers who built 9 million vehicles in the USA!

The numbers say it all: 3 million sold since ‘92. That’s a 200,000 per year average. Congrats, Nissan.

Tomorrow: A milestone, Nissan sets a record for the largest single recall of a model by recalling all 3 million altimas because they catch on fire.

3 mil isn’t even that important of a number? The first 1 million is, 10 million is, so I don’t want to be hearing in 3 or 4 years about the 4 millionth car just to fill up the news page – Altima is their VOLUME car..it accounts for most of their sales so of course it sells millions.

Nope, just a regular joe sho who spends his days on this site along with GMI and Cheersandgears. What do you expect? I am a GM fan and these are GM fansites.

It’s a shame the haters muck up the place though. They should just leave here if they don’t like GM. While their at it, they should take their unAmerican asses out of this great country for supporting foreign garbage.

Yeah Comodore, 3 million suckers have fallen for Nissans coverup. Oh and btw, the fire recall is already ongoing. Wouldn’t happen in a GM car.

R-head: I hate the “option packaging crap,” but nissan’s not the only company that does it.

Mazda6 is a great car (terrible name)

Altima was originall sold as the “nissan stanza altima” because of regulations. i like the jdm name better

Nissan’s Altima packaging is just too extreme – that’s all. Everyone packages, but 5k for leather?

Good for Nissan. My extended family has another 2 more of those. Here’s a way to sell even more: Cut the Maxima from the lineup, & force would-be Maxima buyers into the Altima.

Agreed that the Altima coupe looks sweet.

Guys, stop WOWing at 3 million cars. That’s not that much for a midsize sedan that is the company’s main product. How many Civics have been sold? Camries? Corollas? Impalas? Tauruses? all of these nameplates are in the millions, some even in the tens of millions.

I don’t mind the new Altimas, but I dislike the overabundance of amber lens in the taillights, even though the taillights do look pretty nice otherwise and are pretty distinctive.

GM 1487. not to bash on your “GM RULEZ” thing cuz i think GM makes a good car. but 3Millionth Altima? thats something. GM cant make a 3millionth anything unless its Badge Engineered. Cept the Corvette. but anyways Japan seems to be doing well here. Milestone after Milestone. and its not only Nissan
Honda Ridgeline K.O.’s Chevy Avalanche
Nissan Titan K.O.’s Chevy Silverado
Nissan Altima K.O. Just about all american sedans.
honestly i just dont know what to tell ya. lol.
