Random Jerk – Sorry I’m late.

I don’t really see the point in this. This simply adds weight and cost to the vehicle without benefit. LOL, seriously though, pedestrians should learn to use the cross walk and wait for the proper time. Even at 30mph, the person is dead.

I say we just dress everyone up in those inflatable sumo suits. There’s some safety.

Hood propped up on a Nissan? There’s a surprise. It happens more than you think and it’s not from hitting a pedestrian either. Nissans a known for their pitiful reliability.

I think most people here are missing the point of engineering like this. It’s easy to say it’s a waste of time on the manufacturers part, but in reality the car manufacturers designs are largely driven by increasingly stringent government regulations. I say good on Nissan, and Honda previously, for trying to stay ahead of the game. I bet in a few years it’ll be a requirement for vehicles everywhere, and then the slower minded manufacturers will be scrambling and retooling to get it done.

It is quite possible for it to become mandatory… just like how motorized seat belts lead to driver airbags, then front passenger airbags then side, head and even rollover protection. Almost every new car has at least 6 airbags now. Pedestrians can be a drivers worst nightmare, and it’s always easier to blame drivers for accidents involving them. I know I’d rather have one of these hoods on my car… we’re not beyond mistakes, & for those at fault it could mean the difference between medical charges & a vehicular manslaughter rap.

To all the nay-sayers about this technology: I doubt it was intended to save people who are hit at 60 MPH. I imagine it’s engineers had in mind much lower impact speeds, like 20 MPH. So knowing that, which would you rather be hit by if YOU were a pedestrian; the old style hood, or one that had been designed to cushion your head a bit? And I doubt that it took very much engineering or cost to design the hood to deform in this particular way.

Also remember; cars these days are designed to sacrifice the CAR in case of an accident and protect the passengers. That’s why there’s so much emphasis on “crumple zones” and “safety cages”. And yes, it has gotten to the point where car interiors seem to be literally lined with airbags. But again, which would YOU have come away from YOUR accident unscathed; the interior of the car you were driving, or your body?

Pretty soon with all these “safety features” the cars will be built with an interior cage with tons of padding and the rest of the car made of cotton. Not really, but close enough. Even minor crashes already cost a ton of money to fix.

christianboy10: right on! I really hate it when they invent useless technology like this. All that needs to be said is: the driver is the one responsible for his/her actions. Crap like this WILL NOT prevent people running over each other! It’s just added complexity and simply not needed for anyone with half a brain or better.
