Nissan recalls 143,000 cars over faulty tire pressure monitor

10/12/2009, 2:16 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Nissan says that it will recall as many as 143,000 2008 and 2009 model year Nissan and Infiniti products over a tire-pressure monitoring system nut that may fail in areas where heavy amounts of road salt are used during the winter months.

The automaker will replace a nut that could deteriorate due to the corrosive salt. The nut secures the monitoring system to its sensor-transmitter. If it fails, the monitoring system lamp would illuminate. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that drivers could ignore the lamp when they see no tire is flat and should a problem arise, the system would not adequately warn drivers used to the illuminated lamp.

The small recall will cover vehicles driven in 20 northern states and the District of Columbia, although a non-recall service campaign will be made available for owners in other states that don’t use significant amounts of road salt. It applies to certain 2008 Nissan Rogues, 2009 Nissan Muranos and Cubes and 2008-10 Infiniti M35s and M45s. The automaker will begin notifying customers on November 9 of the recall.

For Nissan, this is just another recall, something owners are used to when they own imports. Something that GM owners never ever have to worry about and if they do, GM is the only company with the reputation to fix it right the first time. but recalls rarely happen with General Motors products. That is a fact.

So Americans can’t be arsed to spend a few minutes in their lives, to check something as simple as tire pressure for their cars? No wonder car companies have to create useless systems like this.

I guess before I try to say that GM rarely has recalls as fact. I’d better get my head out of my A$$ and do a google search first:

Has anyone noticed that the more cars and trucks the Japanese build, the more recalls they get? Just like the Big 3. When their numbers got bigger and bigger, the number of recalls got bigger and bigger.

It’s what happens. But their are people that will “never buy a GM vehicle again!!!”

Idiots.

Stix, that most people are either too lazy or too busy isn’t really the big surprise here… it’s who has joined those ranks that really speaks volumes. A lady I work with has an 18 year old daughter. The other week the daughter spots a school buddy- a guy- pulled over to the side of the road in his small Mercedes sports car. He has a flat tire… well, no, he has a shredded tire that he’s been riding around on so long the rim is actually damaged. He’s just standing there by the car when she stops to check. She asks him what happened. He says he doesn’t know and that he’s just waiting for a tow truck. She asks if he has a spare tire. He says he has no idea and that he wouldn’t know how to change it if he did. How sad is that.

To make a long story short she ended up changing the tire for him- by herself- while he and his equally useless male companion played soccer by the side of the road.

I don’t blame the two boys. I blame the parents. You see my work mate’s husband, whom I know very well, is an old fashioned redneck just like myself who took the time to teach his daughter that there’s more to driving than just having that laminated piece of plastic in your wallet. Now I can’t speak for the boy’s parents, except I’d bet a set of Merc rims they couldn’t have changed that wheel either.

The only thing I can offer on those who will never buy a brand again is to ask how the issue was dealt with. If the company or dealerships didn’t treat them well in handling the recall or made them pay for the repair before there was a recall and wouldn’t reimburse them (have lots of friend who encountered that) then that would be justification for never buying a brand.

Personally, I’ve owned two domestic and three imports. Every one of them had at least one recall. Folks, it happens. What I will say is that the recalls on the imports seemed to be handled with more courtesy so they didn’t bother me as much.

That girl should have demanded money or left their butts on the side of the road to wait for the tow truck…
Dumbest person I ever met was a guy who thought the reason you changed the oil in your car was cause it ran out, even with three people explaining it to him he still didn’t get it. I kinda want to go find him to see how many engines he’s gone through by now…

There is an advantage to TPMS. I had a tire get punctured while on the highway, but it didn’t blow out. The TPMS let me know right away that the pressure was decreasing rapidly, and I pulled over and changed it. No rims were ruined and nobody was hurt. In this case, TPMS is a good thing.

I’m glad my Nissan has a good TPMS system and that we don’t have snow in Las Vegas.

I would rather buy a Nissan with 10 recalls on it than any kind of GM or crappy Buick with no recalls. THe Nissan will still have higher resale value and if you die in it, at least you die in style. Screw GM. They’re like the annoying dung beetle that everybody just wants to die but it won’t. Be American, buy any import.
