I think the fact that Porsche has not paid enough attention to is the engine. It is hand built in a hermetically sealed work chamber by one person which means that every engine makes different power figures, and maybe even acts different. A magazine here in my native California tested a GT-R they got on a dyno and it read out to be 520hp! Porsche makes awesome cars and obviously nobody will solve this debacle except Nissan but I really think Nissan is telling the truth. I mean they can tell Porsche to come look at the tires and that means a little but it is not rock solid evidence. Nissan set the record in stone IMO when they asked Porsche to come learn how to drive the GT-R; if they couldn't back up the claims they have been making then there would be nothing to show the expert Porsche drivers that they don't already know about driving a car.

Silly Porsche, their engine in the wrong side! Come to Detriot and we'll building you the ZR1 that can beat a GT2 and at half the cost. Its easy WHEN THE ENGINE IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE!

Also nobody likes butthurt whinners cry babies.

STep: Don't forget the art factor to those who actually lack the ego. Emotion runs high when it comes to cars. Which is why I'd use a European for a GT and a GTR for a real performance car.

Nowei: Right by the same token, it can be said about the Bimmer 6 series being slower in 0-60 compared to their turbo offerings, thus making it a much slower car for a much higher price. Real world performance can't be compared to specs cause the driver's skill is ultimately what decides how fast it passes the finish line. Not to defend Nissan but I think Porsche is just being a cry baby. Though it sucks for them to be used a benchmark against one of the greatest budget supercars ever made.

I gave some thought to Achleitner's original claim, and his reasoning really doesn't make any sense. He basically said that because the GT-R was 20kg heavier than the similarly powered 911 Turbo it couldn't possibly do 7:29. This argument is completely based around power-to-weight. If it held up in the real world there's no way a 4-door Cadillac that's about 400lbs. heavier than the GT-R would only be 5 seconds slower, and no way in hell a 1000bhp Veyron could only post a 7:40. Furthermore, if Achleitner's logic was sound there should theoretically be some kind of formula where a car's power-to-weight ratio could be used to reliably predict a Nurburgring time.

This peak into the mind of Porsche's Product Chief reveals a lot about why the Turbo is comparably slower than the GT-R.

Then again, I suppose it's also possible that Porsche don't know how to drive their own cars, as well, and they could be much faster than even they know.

I agree with Z06ified in that those cars are in a class of there own. I would love to see the new CTS-V go head to head with the M5 at Nürburgring. I have a feeling the CTS-V would win. But the top 10 fastest cars that lapped Nürburgring, the GT-R is the most affordable and I bet it is the most reliable too. You buy a european car for one reason and one reason only "status symbol". No other logical reason.

Porsche has always whined about things, take the BMW M3 GTR for ALMS. Porsche whined and whined because the street M3 had the inline6 3 litre and the GTR had the then M5 V8 engine. BMW whipped their ass so they went back to find discrepancies and found it in the number of roadcars needed in order to enter a vehicle with similiar specs. Kind of like how NASA Honda Challenge has banned TSX conrods on the K20A engines even though the rules state as long as it is from a similar chassis/engine and same make.

I think Nissan did achieve this time. For those of you familiar with the car show Top Gear, the GT-R was a tenth of a second faster than a Carrera GT and tied with a Ferrari 430 Scuderia. While i understand that this track is not the Nurburgring, it shows the GT-R is pretty damn fast. Oh yeah and the GT-R beat a Porsche 911 GT3 RS as well.

I agree with Raffa, when GM was criticized for reporting times on the ZR1 that beat that of the GT-R. GM released a video... I'm sure there's a video somewhere. NISSAN let us see it!!!!

@ Nickkop, I understand what you're saying about the driving dynamics but what is happening here is that they are able to get better times on the 911 Turbo which should, based on physics, be harder to control than the GT-R's front midship engine design.

One last point. Porsche has over 26,000 victories in motorsport more than any other car manufacturer. So Nissan, don't give me that BS that Porsche doesn't know how to drive your car. As if there's something so special about it.

Not to knock Nissan, but until proven wrong.. I too believe that there were non-stock parts and I read somewhere that they had a running start in the beginning of the the lap.

"You notice how Porsche records these track times with 350 feet less than everyone else. Which could translate to a few seconds of time, everyone else goes the full distance. Why doesn’t Porsche?"

Porsche also does not run the factory stock tires on their cars. They usually use Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires, which are practically R-Compound. The only car I'll cut them slack on for that is the GT2 which does come with Sport Cup tires from the factory. But its those same tires that has much to do with the great performance numbers the GT2 puts up. I'd like to see what the GT2 would do with the same GoodYear runflats that the stock Z06 comes with. Considerably worse numbers, I can assure you.

"So a Vette and Viper finishing this track in under 7.25 makes them great cars but in a totally different classes of cars than the Porsche and GT-R. Porsche and Nissan are at it with 2 cars that are relatively similar. "

Yep, that would be the faster class. ;)

So when I when the lotto Friday, I will buy a GT-R, 911 Turbo and just to fuel the debate a ZR-1. Then Hire Sabine to third party test it. Since thats not going to happen. Just buy what you like and STFU.

Nissan, instead of saying well thought phrases, Why not a live demonstration?...
I'm sorry but Porsche did the right thing.
They tested, they measured, they couldn't match numbers on track and physics, they complained.

whips001: You are right the Carrera GT did place at 7m 28s but what's interesting is that it didn't go as far as either of the Porsche or Nissan. You notice how Porsche records these track times with 350 feet less than everyone else. Which could translate to a few seconds of time, everyone else goes the full distance. Why doesn't Porsche?

Way to go NIssan let then boys at Porsche know that classes will begin in the fall and enrollment begins whenever Porsche signs up. What's interesting is that Porsche got beat on their own home turf.

whips001: The Carrera GT is a totally different car it isn't in the same class as the GT-R. The Carrera GT is in the same class as the Viper and Corvette. It is ridiculous to compare cars in different classes.

vincentvegas74: Wow! Let me guess American Muscle only cars right. A track like this take finess not all out brute force. So a Vette and Viper finishing this track in under 7.25 makes them great cars but in a totally different classes of cars than the Porsche and GT-R. Porsche and Nissan are at it with 2 cars that are relatively similar. Twin turbo, six cylinders (under 4.0L), mid-engine set-up, and AWD. I know the GT-R isn't truely an AWD car, it is partial depending on the cars traction.

Dose it really matter who is faster, your gonna pay big bucks for ether car, and your only going to get your money's worth out of it is on the track, and that's "IF" your half a dissent driver. And Porsche just needs to step it up, for a better price...

Now for those ignorant, irresponsible, Dosh-bag that street race, TAKE IT TO THE TRACK YOU DOSH!

I think the carrera GT did breifly hold the ring lap time record, then, I think though Im not sure, the 2006 corvette Z06 beat it, followed by the GT-R, Corvette ZR-1 and now, the current king of the ring the Dodge viper ACR. I wonder what times would look like if they brought these cars to a smaller track, laugana seca or watkins glen? It just seems to me when you put cars on a 13 mile long track there is bound to be huge differences in times, even with the same car.

I love how all the manufacturers and tons of drivers believe the GT-R to be some sort of fluke just because they can't push out the same lap times haha. The truth of the matter is that never before in the history of the world has a car been built like the GT-R. I mean built as in the actual manufacturing processes and the parts and software used etc. Never has any car been put together like it and as such it needs to be treated accordingly. The real fact is that Nissan has developed something with capabilities never seen on a road car which means all the barriers are now waiting to be broken. Pure and simply the GT-R is a highly advanced car and operates like no other so there is no surprise that it leaves many scratching their heads.

Sore ass loser Porsche, someone beat your 911 Turbo, get the F over it. Instead of crying, do something, make the next one better. I love Nissan's response! Watch they'll cry again when the GT-R Spec-V come out.

you never know.. i believe it.. you are comparing machines with completely different driving dynamics: Porsche Turbo and GT3 / GT2 with rear engine / transmission... vs Nissan's backwards (to Porsche) front engine, rear transaxle GT-R

you have to admit you would want your "baby" to win, if you were Porsche and spent so many millions in engineering and development, and had your historic reputation at stake while this "newcomer" (to Porsche) came to trounce you and snatch the throne.. Also with their driving style, they might just be very set in their ways, and closed-minded. Porsche style would be more like learn to control the car, while Nissan's is control the car then let the computers have some control and dont lose your daring enthusiasm

You don't shave 25 seconds by knowing a car's "full capabilities". Professional drivers already know them. Give me a break, Nissan.
