Not good news for Nissan. This is the one glaring dead spot in their lineup: they have no affordable RWD 2+2 sportscar with a trunk. The GT-R is 2+2, has a trunk and is driven at the rear (and front) wheels but it costs $90k+.

The 370Z doesn’t count in this because it is a two-seater with no separate trunk.

A front-drive Sentra coupe, even in 200hp SE-R trim, just isn’t a serious alternative from this company either.

I was car shopping recently and definitely was only considering RWD cars and AWD Subarus and I would not consider a new or used Z for this reason alone no matter how good it is.

Whoever said it was wise to give car buyers what they want is right. This is unfortunately more reason to consider the Toyota/Subaru coupe and Genesis Coupe R-Spec.

It’s all good. Mazda has the perfect affordable RWD sports car and has had it since 1989. If I feel the itch to go looking for a RWD sporty car for cheap, I’ll be starting there.

Wow this news sucks a**. Nissan already has the Altima Coupe, what they want to skip out on giving us a RWD sports coupe in favor of a Sentra based coupe that’s just going to compete against all the other sub compact coupe variants out there? Weak….

Looks like I’ll only be looking to shop for a Hyundai Genesis Coupe (after it gets GDi) or the FT-86 if Toyota actually comes through on it…

Have you ever owned one Dr F? I have to disagree. The last gen was pretty nice and definitely didn’t feel or look cheap.

@outdoor. I couldn’t agree more. Toyota use to do that. Now they give people cars with SA problems, and the countless other problems we have read about. So much so, that NHTSA has had to recall almost every model. Yep, give people a car that has proven to have killed people based on Toyota’s stellar quality.

I could go on, but why. I get tired of proving my point about this company.

well, if toyota and subie work up that ft-86 thing, which they seem to be doing, you could perhaps hope that nissan would cook up something to compete, which would smell 240sx-ish…but…yeah…shouldn’t bet the farm on it…

I know no one wants to hear this but the the Genesis Coupe is less pricey RWD tuner car. I can honestly say though we sell more 370Z than Genesis Coupes to the younger crowd. 370z $560/mo roughly at 72 and Genesis Coupe is about $417/mo roughly at 72. Which is a better deal to you for only $150 more a month?

Why would they put the project to rest? Now is as good as time as any. Americans don’t want a RWD tuner car? It seems to be working for Ford and Chevy just fine.

I don’t see people saying “Well, I like the new Mustang/Camaro, but it’s the RWD that gets me. I’d rather have a FWD with half the power; to be honest.”

Come on Nissan, there are thousands of people who would jump on this and you know it!

the tundra ironman is garbage (i won’t mention the raptor it’s a ford), LF-A is ferrari money so that isn’t a comparision, where is their sports converible the solara to the Z next. ft-85 is vaporware the same as the now dead silvia, so far only hyaundai has had the cajones to make semi-affordable rwd (sales figures back up the fact that it is a dead market)

Well not really. Its not a bad car, my aunt has the latest Sentra. But it’s a lame car. A car that Nissan “along with other manufacturers” feel its fit for the american auto enthusiast instead of cool cars like the 240SX Silvia. Of course the product of America would make a suggestion as such. “No no no. Don’t bring a cool Silvia here. Its not what Americans want. Tell you what. We’ll work on a Sentra Coupe. Next closest thing to a cool car.” Well, atleast they brought the GT-R over.

GT-R was never about speed, it was about how it dominated corners.
FT-86 technically doesn’t exist yet to win any races.

Titan is a really really old truck now. At the time of launch it was right where it was meant to be, times changed, new generations of GM and Ford came out, Tundra got refreshed too…Titan still old truck (hint: it should die along with the Armada)

Altima — regularly (for a long time now) the most “fun to drive” of the mainstream mid-size family sedans (Fusion/Mazda6 and Kizashi only recently challenging this title…but Altima still way more fun than the Camcord) Also SE-R…don’t think Camry SE quite compares.

Z — supra dead, FT-86 doesn’t exist yet….umm…Toyota currently has no sports car. AT ALL.

Sentra — yes its ugly, yes its stupid and slow, but at least the Spec-V has real performance enhancements over the stock model compared to the whole Corolla S debate….I guess in Toyota’s terms “sport” means a stupid mild bodykit on the same slow and pointless car (who stilll uses 4-cog autos?)

Nissan is moving people. Toyota is not. The Camry V-6 is quick, but from inside you would have absolutely no clue.
Just read in Car that they don’t even sell the Camry in the UK. If the US market was a bit more like the UK market, maybe the world would be getting a 240sx after all.

After such recent introductions as the Cube and the Juke did any of you honestly believe a spiritual successor to the 240 was even remotely a possibility in Nissan’s upcoming repertoire?

You’ll be lucky if you get a Sentra Coupe that doesn’t blow more chunks than a rookie on their first tequila bender.

Damn. It’s hard to be mad at the company that makes the Z and GT-R, but then again, I won’t be owning a Skyline anytime soon, and don’t like the idea of putting my kids in the trunk. It’s a tiny trunk. The 240 is the one I would actually own.
I won’t even believe the new 86 and Subie-FT will go to market until I see one on a transport. All this comes down to in the end is that, as weird as it still sounds to say, Hyundai deserves props. And sales.

Other than the 370Z, G coupe for Infiniti and GTR, Nissan has nothing worth buying carwise. These models are expensive anyways (even though damn near all sports cars are), and I think that Hyundai will overtake Nissan especially when they get their R&D knuckled down on cars like the Genesis.

I would characterize moving the market
As showing double-digit growth YTY over last year, so….
Sienna and Rav4 are +15%

Toyota was the dominant force last year
in the Cash for CLunkers game
So last year’s sales were inflated
This year sales are flat

Well a Sentra coupe would make since, I think. Nissan has already built a coupe concept about the size of the Sentra, the Nissan Azeal, which is where the current Sentra derived its styling from.

the current sentra is not at all relevant. when the altima coupe came out, ok, fine, honda has one for the accord. here the “me too” logic comes in again. civic has one, so why can’t sentra. well for one, a civic is not that bad looking, and Si is sorta traditional, and only until recently has been only offered in 2-door formats (coupe or hatch).

That is very bad news. I had the last gen 240SX and loved it. Great styling and pretty good performance too. Who knows, maybe they re-consider it again in the near future. The Sentra is butt ugly.
