Nissan may have recently introduced the first mainstream electric car, but that doesn’t mean the company is content to sit pat when it comes to green automobiles. Besides a hybrid Altima with an unusual supercharged powertrain, the company has also announced a goal of achieving best-in-class fuel economy for each of its next-generation vehicles.
The target is part of the Nissan Green Program 2016, which the automaker says is focused on shifting to renewable energy, reducing the company’s carbon footprint and expanding “the diversity of resources used by Nissan.â€
Other key points in the program include increasing the percentage of recycled materials in vehicles to 25%, reducing CO2 emissions by 20 percent and achieving combined sales of 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles between the Nissan and Renault brands.
Nissan has also announced that it will bring a new plug-in hybrid vehicle to the market by 2016, though the automaker offered few details concerning the car.
“Nissan wants to be part of the solution toward a sustainable society – for the sake of the planet and as a significant competitive advantage and a strategic differentiator in the global manufacturing sector,†said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.
With fuel efficiency increasingly a priority for both consumers and automakers, Nissan certainly has its work cut out for it in achieving segment leading efficiency numbers, especially in the highly competitive compact car segment.
