In a move to better align its car, truck and SUV production with U.S. demand, Nissan announced on Monday that it will shift workers at its Canton, Mississippi truck and car plant to produce more Altimas and fewer large trucks and SUVs.
Beginning this September, the Japanese automaker will add a third shift to Canton’s Altima production line and will drop one of two shifts from the plant’s Titan pickup and Armada SUV lines.
During the month of May, Altima sales surged 43.6 percent, while Titan and Armada sales dropped 55.8 and 52.1 percent, respectively.
The shift should allow Nissan to produce about 2,000 additional Altimas per month. No changes are expected to be made at Nissan’s other U.S. Altima production facility — in Smyrna, Tennessee — as that plant prepares to begin production of the all-new Maxima sedan.
