Nissan has announced that it will not hold a press conference next week at the North American International Auto Show, and has no big plan for the Chicago show either. Instead, Nissan is focusing on the New York Auto Show in March.
Nissan plans to unveil its all-new 2009 Maxima sedan at the New York show. “We’ll show the next Maxima in New York and a couple of other things — but not concepts,” Nissan North America spokesman Darryll Harrison told Inside Line. Harrison failed to give any details on the Maxima — or on what other vehicles to expect at the show — but it is known that the next-generation Maxima will have a diesel engine option. It has also been reported that the 2009 Maxima will take on a four-door coupe body style, similar to the Mercedes CLS.
The Maxima’s last overhaul was in 2004.
Despite Nissan’s lack of a press conference, the Japanese automaker will show its Forum concept at the Detroit show.

The last Maxima was a failure. This one should be a sportier alternative to the Avalon.

In 1982 my neighbor had a new Maxima diesel. It had a ladies voice “your door is ajar”. Thought it was so cool as a kid. Neighbor had voice disconnected in matter of weeks. Sold it at huge loss when he blew it up in less then a year keeping up with LA traffic.
Nissan and diesels have come a long way. Liked the present Maxima a lot, its a little long on tooth now. But they have been great handling well equipped car since they had the 4DSC in 90.

The day everyone found out the Altima was now faster and cheaper than the Maxima, as long as you didn’r need every option box ticked, was the day, the Maxima started dying.
It’s like the son who usurps his dad and becomes the man of the house, makes more money, nails more broads and can kick his dad’s ass, while daddy should still be in his prime.

This new Maxima better be completely different. The current one is completely redundant next to the far superior Altima.

I like Maximas, but the 1990 was probably its zenith.
SwerveEarly: Eddie Murphy had a joke about that on his first comedy album.
The car tells him the door is ajar, then later tells hime somebody stole the “bat’ry.’
madcapp and LP640, you’re both wrong, and you need help. J-cat. you’re right. Maxima was too expensive to compete with Taurcamcord of the day, but it was a much nicer car. Altima was put in place as a commuter coffin, 4 cylinder (”Stanza Altima”) only at first. Once the Altima got the V6, the writing was on the wall.

I’m psyched for this new Maxima, I never saw anything wrong with the old one. A business friend of mine owns an 05 with big fat 22’s on it and the thing has some balls; at least a lot more than I expected. The handling isn’t bad either especially with wider wheels; If this new one has the four door coupe styling then the Maxima is going nowhere but up I suspect.

I think a next gen Maxima should be RWD-opt-AWD to differ it from the Atlima more. Use the G35 as a base and build a UNIQUE Atlima!

That’s a great idea, an AWD powertrain would sway alot of customers into going premium who were maybe planning to buy an optioned out Altima. If they came out with a V8 option I think a lot of German car buyers might also be swayed to change knowing that they can still have a luxurious V8 without having it in the shop every other month.

Does anyone but me think the name ‘Maxima’ is, well, almost kind of silly now? Just seems like times were different when this was introduced. Nissan was barely a few years removed from Datsun back then so it kind of made sense to announce to the world they were trying to make their product bigger and better. When I hear ‘Maxima’ now I wonder what male enhancement miracle they’re trying to pitch.

Your clearly not a Nissan fan johnny haha but I believe the Maxima still holds a place in the market; Nissan wouldn’t do a redesign if the numbers didn’t add up, they aren’t GM.

The lack of rwd is what kills the Maxima for me. I test drove one and loved it (over the comparable Altima because of interior space). In the end though it was a sporty fwd. I want a sports sedan not a sporty sedan. Small difference (drivetrain layout) to most people but big difference to me.

Hopefully they’ll show the diesel engine with the intro in NY, along with specifications. I would be interested in buying a diesel Maxima.

Maxima use ti be answer to 5 series. I traded ‘79 BMW with dysfunctional oil pump for 84 Maxima with womens voice (which did not prevent me locking keys inside). Paul Newman use to race them for Nissan, I figured if it’s good enough for Paul it’s good enough for me. Errors of my youth. I traded it with it for my father’s ‘78 Datsun 510. 510 was much closer to BMW 2002 then Maxima to anything. Have to admit with 4 speed manual Maxima was good for 32 mpg highway then and handled kinda OK, but a bot soft for my taste.
Altima is much better looking car now and makes much more sense. We’ll see what Nissan will do with next one. I hope it is not Altima with extra electronic gadgetry.
