For the 2009 model year, the Xterra gets some detail changes, including new styling, standard side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, and roof-mounted lights on the Off-road trim. Two grilles will differentiate the top-level SE trim from the lesser X, S and Off-Road models, with the former wearing a Satin Chrome finished version, while the other making do with a Sandblast Aluminum colored grille. The SE models get new body colored side moldings and leather seats, and X and S models now sport black headlight inner housing surrounds.

Slotting above the Nissan Rogue and just below the Nissan Pathfinder, the Xterra blurs the lines of what defines a compact SUV. While most compact SUVs come standard with a four-cylinder engine, the Xterra packs standard V6 power -- 261 horsepower to be exact. The Xterra's standard transmission is a six-speed manual, with a five-speed automatic being optional. Rear wheel drive is standard on most trims, with four wheel drive complete with a low-range transfer case available for the body-on-frame truck.

A hard-core Off Road model is available, which adds Bilstein shocks, skid plates and a locking rear differential. Up-level models offer newly designed 16 or 17 inch wheels and hill start assist.

No doubt in an effort to help move the trucks in light of the recent rise in gas prices, Nissan is making the Technology Package standard on all but the base trims of the truck. That means buyers will get a Rockford Fosgate audio system, XM Satellite Radio (though a subscription is required, and it's offered on automatic transmission-equipped models only), Bluetooth hands-free phone system, steering wheel audio controls and auxiliary input jack.

A new X Gear Package is offered on the S and SE models only, that includes roof rack crossbars, fog lights, first aid kit, cargo net and gear basket.
