Nissan’s ‘ECO pedal’ to push back on the war against fuel consumption

08/04/2008, 4:24 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although gas prices around most of the country have retreated a bit from the $4 mark, most of us are still driving with a proverbial egg beneath the accelerator pedal. However, beginning next year, that egg will be able to push back in some Nissan-branded vehicles.

Japan’s number three automaker announced on Monday that it will launch a new technology next year dubbed the “ECO pedal.” The pedal uses onboard electronics to determine when the driver is excessively accelerating – and therefore wasting gas and emitting more emissions – and can actually push back on the driver’s accelerator foot.

According to Reuters, tests have shown that the ECO pedal can improve fuel economy by 5 to 10 percent. Although Nissan has announced that the ECO pedal will make production next year, the Japanese automaker failed to mention in what vehicles and in which regions of the world.

But spirited drivers fear not – the ECO pedal can be turned on or off manually by the driver.

So what if I have to floorboard it to merge onto the interstate or get out of a bad situation? I don’t want force feedback on my gas pedal like it’s some sort of video game. Who is going to be the one deciding how much accelleration is necessary? I hate it when other drivers take 5 minutes to get up to the speed limit. Say no to electronic nannies!

Now your gas pedal will be able to say, “Shame on you, you wasteful person!” I’d like to see how well the GT-R runs the ring with this technology added.

NO! GOD, NO.

i don’t want to argue with my car about how fast i should be accelerating. i get in enough arguments about that with other people.

I herewith propose the EXPLO-pedal which will sense when people are not accelerating fast enough to get out of the way, and electronically pull them over and simultaneously explode the vehicle and all its occupants.

This is going to make old geezers drive even slower than before. They already slow to a crawl to go around any curve… heaven forbid the car’s body actually move a little bit off of the completely flat plane.

I’m a law-abiding adult, the last thing I need is more interference in my life from “Big Brother”……….in this case Nissan. Worry about your own life before you insist on how I go about my own. If I want to drive MY car with a heavy right foot & spend $100. a week on gas……..THAT’S MY BUSINESS!
The only way I’d go into a Nissan dealership would be run into their bathroom to take a crap.

You better reread the post. It didn’t say anywhere it was an option, what it said was,”it will be available the beginning of next year in some Nissan branded vehicles”. Those “some” Nissan vehicles will be whatever they decide to put it on!

That’s unnecessarily intrusive. Lighting up an indicator in the instrument cluster should be the most the car can do to tell you how to save gas.

What ever happened to KNOWING HOW TO DRIVE??? We managed to make it through nearly an entire century of the automobile without parking-assist, radar cruise, lane-keep assist, and now a freaking accelerator nanny? If people want to drive greener, then leave it to them to decide to accelerate slower when they’re able, yet still be able to haul ass if it’s life-or-death necessary. Please auto companies, stop making it even easier for people to drive while dicking around with their iPhones.

It should be optional. I hate the thought of something so stupid adding to the cost of every vehicle.
