No congestion charge in New York City

04/08/2008, 3:45 PM

By paulee

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed congestion charge to enter Manhattan between 7am and 7pm was thrown out before reaching the first voting stage on Monday. The $8 toll for cars, or $21 for trucks, was proposed as far back as last July, along with other ‘green’ measures under the PlaNYC proposal. Money raised was supposed to go towards improving NYC’s public transit systems, Bloomberg said.

Critics wondered aloud what kind of traffic jams collection of the charge would cause outside of the pay-to-access areas as well as where the revenue would be spent. Furthermore, the tax would financially strap those who could least afford it.

“The congestion bill did not have anywhere near a majority of the Democratic conference, and will not be on the floor of the Assembly,” said a Democratic Assembly spokesperson, as per the New York Times.

London, England uses a congestion charge system, collecting £8 (about $16) from passenger car drivers to enter areas of London between 7am and 6pm. Oslo, Norway, and Singapore also use similar systems.

I was in NY for the Auto Show and it was a madhouse
Charging more money will solve the problem, it will however put more money in crooked politicians pockets so that they can pay for more 22 year old prostitutes
NY is nothing but a big rip off

As a New Yauker, it was a long shot anyway.
The MTA doesn’t deserve another dime, since the just raised fares last month.
The have enough Vice Presidents to fund another 2 Subways.
Mismanagement is the catchphrase when a New Yorker thinks MTA.
Great design, horrible management.
Sometimes the little guy wins over the monopoly.

DrFill: you think your transit authority is a joke here’s what we have to put up with in Vancouver. The board is unelected, gives themselves raises whenever they feel like it, and compensates for the systems massive deficits through fuel and property taxes whether or not you use the system or if it’s even available where you live. And with the Olympics less than 2 years away they’re managing to disrupt just about every major artery as construction continues on all the new routes being added to our beloved ‘Skytrain’ system. The silliest part is most of the Olympic events are in Whistler which is over an hour’s drive from Vancouver.

I can’t believe London already uses this system. There really is no end is there? One day they’re going to install these big ass filters all over the place and start charging us to breath. They’re going to tell us how the air was too dangerous, and they needed to start filtering it. Now, to keep the filters running they’re gonna have to charge us to breath. Wait and see.

hateful83…of course London uses the system! I mean I love Europe, born and raised there, but come on – it’s Europe. They solve every problem by just charging money and regulating everything. Unfortunate that a lot of our American politicians are so desperate to become more like Europe. From universal healthcare to..well, THIS story, mismanagement is out of control no pun intended

London’s biggest F*** up is the Congestion Charge… Ken Livingston can f*** himself and die for all I care…

Not that I drive into work in London because:

1) There’s still ****loads of congestion

2) It would cost too much

In all fairness when there is no charge *bank holidays, weekends etc* I have been known to take the old 318is down to work…

It’s a load of wank and more power to the New Yorkers for voting against it… We all “petitioned” against it, but we never really have a say… I trully think if Ken was exiled from the place of the planet not a single Londoner would miss him.

You know, there is a proposed solution to all of this overtaxation. It involves taking physical action though.

The other thing people can do is forego living in these big cities and trying to work in smaller, more quaint places. If you’re getting raped working for some hedge fund in London, consider opening a dog cafe in Newcastle.
