No payment? Car won’t start

03/09/2006, 2:26 PM

Dealers have begun offering financially unstable customers the ability to finance a new car with one catch: No dough, no go. The Chicago Tribune looks at the case of Delilah Grant, whose recent bankruptcy stood in the way of her getting a car. Luckily, she found a dealer willing to sell her a car. Now, a microchip in 1996 Pontiac Bonneville will disable the starter if she doesn’t make her payment on time. Jon Sheldon, an attorney with the National Consumer Law Center in Boston, said devices such as On Time are “almost a form of servitude,” though they haven’t generated complaints from consumers. “I think it’s a very abusive practice, but it’s one of those areas that people don’t complain about,” Sheldon said. “It’s a matter of either pay on time or lose access to your job. It just puts more pressure on them to put their car payment ahead of their mortgage or rent.”

sounds legit to me, the car is the property of the person leasing it to you, so it’s their right to disable it if you haven’t paid the agreed upon amount.

Yeah, or just don’t buy such an expensive car you have to decide between mortgage or car note.

I’ve read people arguing this violates people’s rights. How, I ask? Your not forced to such such services. You’ll just have to shop for a long time to find a dealership that’ll work with you.

If you can’t afford it why bother to own/lease it. The car dealers are businessmen and they are in the business to make money.
It drives absolutely crazy when people think that they can live off the sweat of others.

That’s bound to make alot of Afro-Americans mad. Imagine that, having to meet your financial obligations in a timely and responsible manner.

Madcapp stop being such a troll. That’s twice in a day I’ve heard you make comments about women or blacks.

Sounds like a good system to me, I mean if I was a bank or a dealer I’d be sick of people not paying either. Plus being a repo man isn’t the safest profession in the world. This will just make it easier. Now only if they could come up with a way to lock you outta of a house you fail to make payments on and a credit card does something equally as good. And people shouldn’t buy a car that’s beyond their means, I’m 18 and I drive a paid for Blazer…sure it’s not the nicest thing in the world but it’s with in my means, you don’t see me tooling around in a M3 now do you?
