The upcoming Audi R8 e-tron has a great deal going for it: a 375-horsepower electric powertrain, a claimed zero-to-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a 133-mile range. However, it lacks one component found on most other cars: a rear window.

To ensure that the e-tron can back up safely, Audi will the fit the electric supercar with a novel digital rearview mirror. Mounted where a conventional unit would otherwise reside, the digital mirror will consist of a 7.7-inch screen that uses AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) - a bright, low-voltage technology used in certain recent cell phones.

Sending images will be a wide-view rear camera located in an aerodynamically optimized housing that's heated to prevent ice buildup during wintry weather. The automaker says the digital mirror system will incorporate an "intelligent control unit" that will be able to prevent headlight glare from trailing vehicles.

Audi first used the digital mirror system in its R18 e-tron quattro and R18 ultra race cars, which took the top three spots in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The R8 e-tron is scheduled to enter into small-scale production at the end of the year.
