Genesis has to be NACOTY, while the top truck is the Murano

Mike the loser: I agree with you. The GT-R is what everybody wants, but the genesis is more lokely to impact the market.

kitko: Mazda6 is also a good choice.

johnnycanuck: I think the CTS-V is disqualified because the regular CTS came out last year.

RaineMan: The Fit is the icon for $4 gas. It shows that honda was smart to bring it stateside. X6 is not a truck at all.

tzu13: I'd call the Flex and Pilot trucks.

shaver: We've all seen muscle cars before.

Need more oil for GM: most of list list is very good.

Patriot
* Audi A4 - Nothing special/vlass-topper

* BMW 1-Series - Nothing special/very nice

* Cadillac CTS-V - Most notable for performance in its segment I guess/This is probably the best car America has ever built, but I have a problem with giving the award to a new trim level.

* Dodge Challenger - Why?/It's great, but not a game changer.

* Ford Flex - Sure, if you’re giving out awards for the ugliest vehicle ever./It's polarizing -- doesn't work for me.

* Honda Fit - Sure, if you’re giving out awards for boring/The right car for $4 gas.

* Hyundai Genesis - Strong contender because of what it represents for Hyundai’s growth/I agree

* Jaguar XF - Ermm, it’s a Jaguar, who cares??It should be a volvo

* Lincoln MKS - Sure, if you’re giving out awards for utterly RETARDED COMMERICIALS. However, this is the most advanced car Ford has ever made. /Doesn't work for me.

Mazda6 - Decent contender, great looking car./Great contender.

* Nissan GT-R - Too niche, but certainly shook up the high performance category the most./You're probably right.

* Pontiac G8 - Errrm, why?/Don't sell it short, but I'm not sure what the market is -- poor man's BMW?

* Toyota Venza - LOL!? A Ford Edge rip off. Only on here because it’s a Toyota./Crap. skip it.

* Volkswagen Jetta TDI - Sure, if you’re giving out awards for being dumb enough to pursue a technology path that will be obsolete in 5 years…/Mpt bad, but clearly no favorite here.

oldraven: Diesel should only grow. People are forgetting those Horrid GM diesels of yesteryear.

oldraven: "We need a variety of forms of energy storage." You're right.

Genesis is a laughing joke to Americans, the car won't last a year. Americans would rather have a GM product like a Buick or a Cadillac that runs forever and never breaks. Can't say the same about Korean sh1t

I totally agree with Old Raven, for two reasons. 1) Even though diesel is currently more expensive, the higher mileage actually offsets the higher price for those that travel further. If you're just tooling up and down the street to get groceries, then diesel isn't worth the cost. But if you travel 20 miles or more to work each day...

And 2) EVs are great and all, but again, some people like to travel. Imagine going from Vegas to L.A., and having to stay overnight because you need to charge your car. It's only a 280 mile trip, which could be done in a few hours, but because the EVs can't go as far (and probably never will due to weight and space), the few hours becomes a few days.

Fuel cells are a long way off. They will be coming in big around the time my 5-year-old gets her license...

...maybe...

...if the cars aren't driving themselves by that time...

What I want in my garage is:
A nice diesel truck for pulling my boat (Big ol' truck with lots of torque and lots of seats)
A small EV daily driver (Smart ForTwo or something similar)
A long range family car or minivan for traveling (Volt, maybe? Or Flex?)
A decent toy car (Audi R8 would be good)

Of course, I'll be really old before I can afford that lineup...

There is a flaw in that logic, Patriot. The only reason Diesel is more expensive is because the gas companies don't want you to buy it over gasoline. It takes less oil, less energy, and less money to make Diesel, which returns more in efficiency than gasoline. It is a viable alternative, and if you think Electric will fully replace liquid fuel in the next 20 years, you're living in a dream world. As for cost of parts, have you noticed how many gasoline engines are converting to DI? They use the same high pressure fuel system as a diesel. Most DI engines are getting turbos too.

Besides, the last thing we need to do is replace one Monopoly (oil) with another (batteries). We need a variety of forms of energy storage, not just one to fit all situations. Otherwise, what's to stop the world from forming another OBEC (Organization of the Battery Exporting Countries) and playing us all the same way they have for decades?

Personally, my picks for Car of the Year would come down to the Jaguar XF, Lincoln MKS and Ford Flex. I don't mean to pick all Ford (or former Ford) products on purpose, but Ford really decided to put a lot of time and effort into getting these vehicles right. The XF is just beautiful, not much could have been done better. It's truly getting Jaguar back on the right track, and should be credited for doing so. The XF would definitely be my first pick. The MKS is really nice, but unlike the XF there are a lot of things that could have been executed much nicer. Ford had an opportunity to reinvent Lincoln, but they decided to hold back for some reason. It's too bad the Flex isn't selling, it's very high quality, very pleasant to drive and has huge amounts of interior room. Personally I like the looks as well.

I wouldn't suggest the Genesis because it's just an egotistical rip off of many other vehicles at a lower price. Nothing new, nothing groundbreaking, I don't care if it's a good value, and obviously people are taking note of it's less than obvious styling ripoffs.

For truck of the year... Infiniti FX45. They had a theme and had the balls to stick with it. They beautifully executed the vehicle. It's definitely one of the highest performing SUV's on the market, and arguably one of the best looking. The X6 would be another notable mention, but only appeals to a small niche that nobody else would be willing to gamble in.

I see a lot of people suggesting the Mazda6. While I think the new one is a good car, I can see how it will look really dated in 6 years when the next redesign comes around. The interior looks really nice, but very busy. While I haven't driven one, I was able to sit in one and I can testify the interiors nobs and everything would take quite a while to get used to. Not to say it isn't nice, or high quality, just a bit busy in the interior. And the biggest thing is you really can surge the price with options. It starts out at a great price, but damn does it go up quick!

LOL....... You are all wrong, the car and truck of the year will be something that's cheap on gas. As far as Diesel being obsolete, do you have any idea how many Big Rigs there, are you going to pay to trade them all out for gas??? ....Maybe you should thank of what you say, before you say it...

Battery and hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles are the future of the automotive industry.

Diesel, when all is said and done, is not significantly better than gasoline. The better mileage is offset by the higher cost of diesel, and the extra cost of the hardware needed. In the long run, the mechanical simplicity of the drive trains of electric vehicles will make the more reliable, lower maintenance, and easier to build.

Diesel is no more a stepping stone than current generation hybrids are.

Every dollar invested in diesel and bio fuels is a dollar wasted which COULD have been spent on electric vehicle energy storage/production systems instead.

By the time diesel overcomes the cultural hurdle it needs to in order to be popular in America, more and more Volt-like cars will be available and will put cars like the Jetta TDI to shame.

Diesel will be obsolete in 5 years? You just remember that you said that, man. It's hardly even gotten started in North America, but it's a huge segment elsewhere in the motoring world. With new diesel tech. coming out every month or two, it's giving Hybrid technology a hell of a run for its money, even if it isn't a buzz word.

* Audi A4 - Nothing special

    * BMW 1-Series - Nothing special

    * Cadillac CTS-V - Most notable for performance in its segment I guess

    * Dodge Challenger - Why?

    * Ford Flex - Sure, if you're giving out awards for the ugliest vehicle ever

    * Honda Fit - Sure, if you're giving out awards for boring

    * Hyundai Genesis - Strong contender because of what it represents for Hyundai's growth

    * Jaguar XF - Ermm, it's a Jaguar, who cares?

    * Lincoln MKS - Sure, if you're giving out awards for utterly RETARDED COMMERICIALS. However, this is the most advanced car Ford has ever made.

    * Mazda Mazda6 - Decent contender, great looking car.

    * Nissan GT-R - Too niche, but certainly shook up the high performance category the most.

    * Pontiac G8 - Errrm, why?

    * Toyota Venza - LOL!? A Ford Edge rip off. Only on here because it's a Toyota.

    * Volkswagen Jetta TDI - Sure, if you're giving out awards for being dumb enough to pursue a technology path that will be obsolete in 5 years...

The Genesis is revolutionary for Hyundai, not for the auto industry, more specifically the NA auto industry.

I'd go with CTS-V, XF, and 6 for car contenders. For trucks the Ram (new suspension design), Vue Hybrid, and ML320 BlueTec (both for their engines).

CTS-V or G8

Vue or Traverse

Everything else is merely mediocre, far too unreliable and seriously lagging behind their GM superiors

I especially hope no one votes for the Tiguan as that vehicle is breaking no new ground.

Challenger is a show stopper. Should win although its not a very PC choice.
They rarley pick cars as expensive as the GT-R though it is deserving as all hell.
The Genesis is revolutionary in only one way. Thats its origin of mfg, other the that its just a Lexus knock off made by cheaper laborers being sold by a company at a loss to gain foot hold in the prestigous luxury market. Good business decision or overextending for gratuitous ego stroking? Ony time will tell.

WOW ... great list of cars ... trucks doesn't seem so great. Cars -- Audi, Jag, Nissan, Hyundai, GM (albeit one of them a rebadged Holden), Dodge ... it looks like a great field of cars for the journalists to rate! I'm not sure who I'd vote for. But with the depressed US market, I think it'll be a very close race between the G8 and the Challenger. It would not be 'patriotic' to not vote American this year. I'm not saying those cars aren't deserving, but with such a close race between all manufacturers, but I think a domestic should win this time around (sentiment vote should be the tie-breaker if it's this close).

I think it's either Challenger or CTS-V. G8 is the dark horse.

If I were to vote without conscience, GT-R ... giant killer without having to break the bank (relatively speaking)

I could see GTR or Genesis pulling COTY... though it may go to Fit just b/c of popularity and sales projections. Truck will probably go to the X6... though I think that is a joke b/c the X6 is not a truck at all.

Nah, don't think so, if only for the fact that with all the doom and gloom in things automotive the winner needs to be of the high profile variety. Either the GT-R or the CTS-V are your two contenders with the nod going to the latter seeing as it is the home grown entry.

My fantasy pick and longshot however would have to be the Challenger.

There are some tough choices there - many of those contenders are deserving of the award.

I'm not convinced the Genesis is revolutionary. Yes, it offers a lot of luxury for the money, but it isn't THAT inexpensive. It is a $40k+ automobile after all, and its generic styling kills it as a revolutionary player on that alone, IMO.

Only two cars deserve to win.

Mazda 6 for "going light and low drag" policy that's evident in a Mazda2 and Euro/JDM Mazda 6 and that was transfered also to the US version. All that while increasing safety, power and comfort in a beautiful, clean but at the same time distinctive and unmistakable design package.

Hyundai Genesis for being revolutionary in many ways and for showing all the snobs that you can enjoy all the luxury and technology in a inovative and reliable car for half the money.

Maybe its just me but Im not that impressed with the genesis cuz frankly it looks like everything else. Its a frankenstein car of a mercedes,bmw,honda etc. I dont understand why everycar now has to be a a luxuary sedan. Its required to have a certain amount of bells and whistles that you most likely will never use in order to be a "good" car nowdays. Also it seems hyundai is trying to trick people into not thinking the car is a hyundai with the non descripty logos they have on it.... I dont have a hyundai,I have a genesis.
