Toyota says that it has begun the process of hiring workers for its once-delayed Blue Springs, Mississippi, assembly plant.
The automaker says it plans to hire about 2,000 employees, including assembly line workers, managers and operations positions.
“Today marks a big milestone for Toyota Mississippi as we begin building our team,” said David Copenhaver, vice president of administration at Toyota’s Mississippi operations, in a statement released to the media.
On and off, Toyota has been working on the plant since 2007. Initially envisioned as a North American assembly facility for Toyota’s Prius hybrid, the incomplete plant was mothballed in 2008. Earlier this year, Toyota announced it would recommission the incomplete plant in time for fall 2011 production – this time, however, Toyota plans to build its Corolla in Mississippi.
