NYPD adds Dodge Charger to fleet

08/15/2006, 3:09 PM

By admin

NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced Monday the department would begin testing 15 new Dodge Chargers on regular patrols this week. Kelly suggested the new cars would be ordered by the hundreds to supplement the 3,000 Chevy Impalas and Ford Crown Vics that currently bear the NYPD insignia. The car 340 horsepower features a top speed of 150 mph, and the police edition has an engine oil cooler for long sprints down the highway at such speeds. The car can also operate in “stealth mode,” where all the interior lights are dimmed to look like the car is turned off.

I am surprised by this, NY picked up a few of these a few months back, providing 3.5l for patrol/city use and 5.7l for highway use. I can’t see them going 5.7 for the full fleet…

Range Rovers are Land Rovers. I don’t understand why so many people can’t figure that out. Land Rover is the Make and Range Rover is the flagship model. Land Rover Currently imports the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and LR3 into the US. For the rest of the world they make those three models along with the Defender and Freelander. The Freelander is about to be replaced by the Freelander 2 / LR2.

But no one ever says The Land Rover Range Rover, it stems from the time when Rover made the Land and the Range Rovers so in Europe most people would say no I mean Range Rover not Land Rover to distinguish between models. I dont think 2006300C is as knowledgeable as you British_Rover and was referring to the Defender when he/she said Land Rover

I’m inclined to agree with 1952 MG TD. Besides, given the congestion that’s typical with NYC streets, is 340 HP really necessary? For Highway Patrol, go with the HEMI! Manhattan/Brooklyn/Bronx/Queens…go with the 3.5 V6.

For the record: I lost my lunch when I saw a 4-door Charger. On top of that, DCX doesn’t offer a full manual tranny to go with that excellent HEMI. Sacreligious!!! But, I have to admit….in PD livery, that car is sharp. It looks like the cop behind the wheel means business. Good job DCX! Now, change the name to ……CORONET!!!

No in America, American cars should be used by government offices. What people buy with their own personal money is up to them. But seriously why do you need Charger police cars? Like I said Auburn Hills has had these things since last summer and they have a lot of issues with them, also we have Magnums and they aren’t much better. The Intrepids are decent though and the Trailblazers are ok.

The rest of the world does matter because America is usually drawn into your idiotic and self perpetuating conflicts, to no benefit of our own. By coastal I assume you mean New York and LA. Well, New Yorkers make the French seem congenial and Los Angelinos are as deep as a puddle in the Sahara, so we don’t like them either. No woods behind my house, but there is a $400,000 colonial and my neck is sort of an olive color.

The #1 reason, American cars are used in fleets, is becasue the manufacturers offer fleet discounts, just as euro manufacturers give fleet discounts in europe. Also the manufacturers give huge discounts on parts to the municipalities that use the products.

Pittsburgh, PA has been using Impalas for years and they have recently received the new next-gen one’s. They look bad-ass and the V6 seems to have plenty of power to haul ass in the city, V8’s are really unneccessary in most cases and they’re less fuel effecient.

Oil and Trans coolers are pretty much standard features on most police vehicles, take any car and have it idle all day w/ the ac on and a high output alternator pulling a full load then drive at 95 for 5hrs, the damn thing is gonna overheat or at least get damn close. Or have it sit in stop and go all day. They wouldn’t put it in if it didn’t have a purpose.

you must dont know that mostly ALL police cars have upgrades to withstand harsh conditions that the average driver would never encounter in the normal version of the car. i own a charger and couldnt be happier with my purchase. if you dont own one then how can you comment on its reliability? makes no sense.
