Obama declares “tin foil” Ford Granada “the worst car that Detroit ever built”

05/07/2008, 1:20 PM

By Drew Johnson

While Detroit produced some pretty pathetic vehicles in the 1980s and early ’90s, no time was worse for the Motor City than 1970s. Vehicle quality suffered as the Big Three struggled to meet new emissions standards while simultaneous trying to keep their vehicles large. So while there are plenty of cars to choose from to name “Worst car to roll out of Detroit” (most from the 1970s) presidential hopeful Barack Obama has already given the crown to the Ford Granada.

“The car I learned to drive on was my grandfather’s Ford Granada. … It may be the worst car that Detroit ever built,” Obama told WFBQ, an Indianapolis radio station. “This thing was a tin can. It was during the ’70s when oil had just gone up, so they were trying to compete with the Japanese. They wanted to keep the cars big, so they made them out of tin foil. It would rattle and shake. You basically couldn’t go over 80 without the thing getting out of control.”

The Granada was built along side its sister car, the Mercury Monarch, from 1975 until 1982.

Obama’s statement does bring up an interesting point, though — what is the worst car ever to be built by the domestic automakers? There’s a lot of choices out there — from the Ford Pinto to the Pontiac Aztek — so what’s your pick?

As for the Worst car ever made I’d have to say the piece of garbage Olds Cutlass 82, Chevy Vega as mentioned earlier, and or the Chevy Monza only a dumb New Jersey farm girl would be caught dead with one of those lemons. Actually the second generation Granada based on the Fairmont chassis wasn’t nearly as bad as the first. In fact the 4 door small LTD circa 1983/4ish with the 302 was a pretty nice sleeper.

I still remember the TV commercials for the 1st Granada where they were advertised as having a quieter ride than a Mercedes. That was also about the time Ford was trying to move Pintos with a slogan about ‘road hugging weight’. Those were dark days for Ford; I can’t think of one model from the mid ’70s that wasn’t ugly as sin.

Now my Wife’s 1987 Chevy Cavalier Z24 with digital dash – that was a pile of s**** from the start…

Actually, the Mercury Monarch was only the Granada’s twin from 1975-80. The Cougar sedan/wagon on the Fox platform replaced the Monarch for 81-82 as the Granada’s twin.

And the Granada wasn’t a great car by any stretch. But it was exactly what the times called for. That’s why Ford sold about 1.2 million from 1975-77.

The original car was built on a rebodied Maverick sedan platform. And that unit-constructed platform wasn’t exactly robust.

I’d say that the top 5 worst domestic cars were:
5. 1977.5-80 Lincoln Versailles
4. 1982-88 Cadillac Cimarron
3. 1976-77 Dodge Aspen/Plymouth Volare
2. 1980-81 Chevrolet Citation/Pontiac Phoenix/Oldsmobile Omega/Buick Skylark
1. 1971-73 Chevrolet Vega

The Ford Granada was not as bad as the following:

1975+ Chevrolet Nova, that crabbed down the road sideways owing to some crucial stabilizing pin in the chassis that snapped off, causing the frame to go trapezoidal.

1980+ X-cars (Chevrolet Citation, etc.) and J-cars (Cavalier, etc.)

1980+ Ford Fairmonts. I worked for a TV station that had a fleet of these, stripped down with four on the floor, for use as news crew cars. They were so flimsy and dangerous the employees almost walked out over being forced to drive them.

In historical terms, at the end of the 70s the government had added a bunch of emissions legislation that far exceeded the technology capacity of the time. These resulted in spagetti in the engine bays and lots of vacuum tubing. LOTS of running issues back in those days, let me tell you!

Combine that with widespread use of salt on the highways and you had loads of rust in a few short years. Ironically, japanese imports back then were much worse when it came to rust. They had cheesy bodies made of thin metal and typically rusted almost immediately.

If you want to say that late 70s vehicles were among the worst ever made, you’ll get no argument from me. But to single out domestics in this period is more than untrue, it’s inflammatory.

BTW, glad to see 1115 doesn’t disappoint. You can cry all you want, but I NEVER promised to leave you alone. You’re too fun!

Here’s a sample SAT question from a recent test:

TomF, don’t forget Pinto, the flamer. No, not the disco type.
injunraiv, government had pollution regulations in ‘72 which affected ‘73 model year. The rest of the decade was afflicted by gas prices. The quest for smaller, efficient engine and smaller car opened door to foreign manufacturers. 40 years ago US manufacturers were not handling precision very well and probably not even now. In 70’s cars were body on frame (minus Pinto, Granada, Volare, Vega, Nova). All cars mentioned by TomF were attempts to build unibody car. Eventually body on frame won the day in the form of F150, Escalade, Tahoe, Expedition etc. We are reliving gas crises of ’70s.

Well, if you want to get picky the first emission controls came back in the 60s with the PCV system. The thing is, in the early 70s things were still simple. They detuned the cars and lowered compression to increase mpg and meet the ever increasing regs. But man, by the end of the decade you couldn’t even see the engine anymore!

And I agree that this is where the door got opened. But revisionists will tell you the wave came because of japanese quality rather than the sheer size of the car. I can tell you, back then we did lots of rust repair work. But the time the 80s were halfway done, so was that opportunity on domestic cars. But luckily the imports just kept on rusting!

None of this has any bearing on todays vehicles though… Well, only in the mind of some – and I use the term ‘mind’ loosely here! BTW, does it seem like I’m getting to a certain someone? LOL

injunraiv, I agree with most of what you’re saying. However japanese cars rusted because unibody construction, which also made cars lighter. I doubt that they were prepped for salt in winter(were is salt and winter in Japan?). All metal was crappy in 70’s and American cars that were unibody rusted like hell (Pintos, Fairmonst, J-cars, Vega, K-cars). You could always patch VW bug, cause subframe was always OK, not because it was rebuild Panzer.
My uncle had 88 Accord for 18 years. It rusted only where my cousin touched the curb(neighbor’s car, side of the garage with both doors) when he was learning to drive (I was instructor, so it sort of my fault). You cant imagine abuse poor Accord had during learning curve. It was donated with 300K miles on odometer to a needy family with original tranny and motor in perfect shape (minus scratches and appropriate rust) and stuck pop-up light (that was design mistake).

It’s just interesting that they were behind the curve, when the general conception is they were always ahead of it. Of course, this doesn’t explain the Tacoma frame rot issues – that one is wierd. You’d expect it on the unibody cars, but this is a BOF truck! That one is either a design issue or a materials one… Either way, it backs up my contention that the japs don’t have all the answers, nor the only good product out there.

If you ever see a K or a Caravan that just about kills you with a cloud of noxious gas worthy of a Kenworth when it pulls away from a stoplight after idling for awhile- that’s a 2.6.

Could be the beginning of the rapture. I’ve heard his pastor speak. I would like to hear more history on his grandpa…

According to Tim Lahaye (sp?) the rapture comes before the rise of the antichrist. I don’t think this is him…

Isn’t it surprising the topics that can come up in an automotive news thread? ;)

My late grandfather had a Granada. He bought it new in 1976 and kept it for 20 years.

My first car was a silver 1976 2-door Granada. It was slow, didn’t handle great, got 15 mpg at best, and with a 3-speed auto, taking it over 65 would redline the engine but it did give me 185,000 nearly trouble-free miles. It was OK for what it was. I wouldn’t ever want to own one again, though.

If Obama was really smart he would have answered AMC Pacer… it would be a popular and common answer, and you wouldn’t be bashing any of the automakers because the AMC brand is long gone.

Just like everyone on here… Obama took some personal experience and used it out of context to make some sweeping assertion. While the Granada may have been a “tin can,” relative to that time period and that market segment, the honor of “worst” would actually be better bestowed upon the ‘79-’84 Olds Delta 88 with the wretched 5.7L diesel… That diesel was possibly the lowest point for GM of that time… Just like when I mentioned it when tripleonefag tried to point out the Cadillac “4-5-6″ as the worst engine failure in those second-generation Sevilles, but if anyone knew what they were talking about… they’d know that honor goes to that Olds diesel.

But I do agree… anyone who thinks LLN is biased towards the domestic manufacturers is way off base, because they went and purposely asked about the “worst domestic,” and despite what some people may think… anyone old enough to remember knows full well that there were some pretty horrible Japanese cars way back when… The Mazda RX-2 comes to mind… as does the original Honda Accord – which was an out-and-out little ****-box..

GAYMGoff is completely wrong as usual
A woman in my neighborhood had an 81 Honda Accord 4 door just as a side not they all seem to come in light blue and the hood opened forward and was a pain to do any work on Luckily it only needed oil and not much more She gave it to her mother with over 170 k trouble free miles about 10 yrs back. I never bothered to ask if it was still running but Im sure it is
The Older Honda’s where great just like the new ones. Notice how there were NO Japanese cars on that link above and that anyone has mentioned so far

Here’s a hint, LLN: when someone uses the phrase “may be,” he’s not “declaring.”
I’m voting for Frank E. McEnulty. I’d vote for root or Palin as Prez, but not as Veep.
Hell, anybody’d be a better president than Li’l Jorge!
Worst detroit car ever?
