My First car was my dads old Granada. It was a white 1976 coupe with a 351 cleveland in it. I got the car with 75,000 miles. Nine years later and 200,000 and a engine rebiuld. Car runs great. No rust. Best car i have ever driven. And it keeps on going.

A woman in my neighborhood had an 81 Honda Accord 4 door just as a side not they all seem to come in light blue and the hood opened forward and was a pain to do any work on Luckily it only needed oil and not much more She gave it to her mother with over 170 k trouble free miles about 10 yrs back. I never bothered to ask if it was still running but Im sure it is
The Older Honda’s where great just like the new ones. Notice how there were NO Japanese cars on that link above and that anyone has mentioned so far

Just like everyone on here… Obama took some personal experience and used it out of context to make some sweeping assertion. While the Granada may have been a “tin can,” relative to that time period and that market segment, the honor of “worst” would actually be better bestowed upon the ‘79-’84 Olds Delta 88 with the wretched 5.7L diesel… That diesel was possibly the lowest point for GM of that time… Just like when I mentioned it when tripleonefag tried to point out the Cadillac “4-5-6″ as the worst engine failure in those second-generation Sevilles, but if anyone knew what they were talking about… they’d know that honor goes to that Olds diesel.

But I do agree… anyone who thinks LLN is biased towards the domestic manufacturers is way off base, because they went and purposely asked about the “worst domestic,” and despite what some people may think… anyone old enough to remember knows full well that there were some pretty horrible Japanese cars way back when… The Mazda RX-2 comes to mind… as does the original Honda Accord – which was an out-and-out little ****-box..

My first car was a silver 1976 2-door Granada. It was slow, didn’t handle great, got 15 mpg at best, and with a 3-speed auto, taking it over 65 would redline the engine but it did give me 185,000 nearly trouble-free miles. It was OK for what it was. I wouldn’t ever want to own one again, though.

If it had been an Opel Kadett (my vote for worst car), Dodge Colt (Japanese car) or a Honda Civic, with the front shock towers rusting out and going throught the hood at 50,000 miles, Obama probably wouldn’t have said anything about cars. He should run for president in Japan. Worst presidential candidate we ever had……

Come to the UK and see the Ford Granada/Scorpio we had (Merkur Scorpio there) and you’ll see a car that was big, roomy, had loads of space and cruise oh so well on the motorway. Handled a bit like a boat though…

Never had a comfier ride than in our granada – mercs paled in comparision and I’ve been in an S600 AMG

As for reliability, well ours lasted from 1989 to 2000 and we only let it go because it wasn’t worth sorting the autobox

I have no opinion on the worst car. I do have an opinion on some I’ve seen be pretty bullet proof. Chevy Celebrity – as mentioned, mid to late 80’s Volvo’s, late 80’s early 90’s Dodge Dakota’s. These stand out to me as being above average as far a reliability.

My father had a Dodge Dart which was a great car with the slant 6 engine.
Then, he got rid of it for a leased Ford Granada. It was by far the worst car I have ever driven. The car would groan loudly out of nowwhere, it was so embarrassing. When you turned the steering wheel left it wanted to go right, the paint just came off in splotches.
It is because of the Granada that I have never even sniffed a Ford Dealer since then.
His next car was a Chevy Celebrity, which while it was a pretty bad car for handling, it lasted 17 years-and may still be going.

The 2.6 was the Mitsu engine, injunraiv. They even had the nerve to badge early models with this engine with ‘Hemi’ on the fenders. The 2.5 was a long stroke 2.2- all Chrysler- and a much better engine in terms of reliability. If you ever see a K or a Caravan that just about kills you with a cloud of noxious gas worthy of a Kenworth when it pulls away from a stoplight after idling for awhile- that’s a 2.6.

I’m with Jayc on this. The worst part of the Reliant was the optional 2.5 engine, built by Mitsubishi, IIRC. 19 hrs to replace the timing belt, and you had to do it or ruin the engine at 70,001 miles.

It was cheap and reliable, and there are still quite a few on the road today.

I’m suprised how many people think the K-car was a horrible car. Bare bones, no frills car, but it was reliable and cheap.

It seems as almost all Ford’s from around that era, specifically their larger cars were pretty ugly.

injunraiv- That was a pretty pathetic car. I had owned a Subaru Legacy, a very early model, and it was a really nice car, but expensive to maintain and just not enough room, very small.

tripleonefive- I would have to disagree with that list completely. Sorry, but it doesn’t list them as being good or bad, but simply just mentions every big fad in the auto world and lists any large car as “irresponsible”.

Anybody stupid enough to blame the creation of the Hummer on the Ford Explorer, aren’t that smart.

We had a ‘75 Grand Monarch Ghia and it never, ever broke. Probably one of the most reliable cars out there. The ‘83 Valentino Continental wasn’t nearly as reliable. Cadillac didn’t hit bottom until the 80s.

Early Chrysler K-Cars (Dodge Aires/Plymouth Reliant) beat the
Grenada hands down IMHO, for worst car Detroit has ever built,
followed closely by the Omni/Horizon, 1st gen Ford Escort (ask the man who owned one! ) and the Cadillac Cimmaron.
Honorable mention goes to the late-80s GM full-sized cars (when
they went to front wheel drive), 3rd Gen (late 90s) Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable, 80-82 Thunderbird/Cougar and any car unfortunate to be powered by a Oldsmobile diesel engine or the Cadillac V-8/6/4.
