LOL man you guys are funny as hell. Thank God the lot of you aren’t in charge anything to do with rest of the world or this country. First off I’m assuming most of you vote for GW Bush. Yeah that was real bright. So if you really stop and think about it most of this mess we are in is your fault in the first place. This is pure comedy. Change will come but it won’t be because you folks. Whether Obama is part of the catalysts for it that change. Actually if you voted for Bush and you didn’t want a Black man in the “White House” then you shouldn’t have voted Bush LOL. You’ll get that one half way back to your car seat lol.

As for the fuel crap. Yeah both there plans aren’t viable plans. And until at the top stop the greed and think of the greater good then nothing will change or change will happen very slowly. Again thank for the laughs.

Wait now I am very confused. On the news Obama based McCain saying his plan wouldn’t help us fast enough in the short term. Yet Obamas solution is increased ethanol production? We can do that withe McCains plan. And Obamas plans dont see a payoff until 2027? How is that helping us today. I’m beginning to think Obama is full of BS with no real plans to the rhetoric he spews. At least McCain with all his flaws seems to have actual viable plans and not a bunch of empty promises.

I don’t think McCain’s plan will do anything, because 300 million is not even pocket change in DC. It is definitely media posturing. At least he has some past that can be recognized and nobody can call him coward or less then a true patriot. I know nothing of Obama: he spend 2 years in Senate and was planning his next step (presidency) for those 2 years, which means he did not do **** for the country. I am not aware of his achievements except being on Harvard Law Review. Admirable, but has nothing to do with executive office. His dilettante ideas of taxing oil industry will backfire much worse then identical move in ’70s: oil companies stopped producing oil and its byproducts in US and started importing. That is why we are where we are today. Oil corporations are public companies: they must make money for investors. Otherwise execs can be fired or even jailed. Their profits are less then Coca Cola and Pepsico. Why don’t we surcharge drink manufacturers for their profit and re-invest the proceeds into health care to combat obesity? Those communist ideas ruined most of communists states, they can do US in as well.

What alarms me is that the “solution” to our present day hurt at the pump is to look into the future–far beyond the presidential term(s) of the next president. 50 mpg by 2027, pilot programs to develop batteries. There is nothing on the horizon that can free Americans from the economic crunch we’re in. We’re losing our houses, we’re paying a lot more to drive to work so that we don’t lose more. Just when we can conjure up enough problems at home, our energy *dependence* on areas of the world that categorically disagree with our way of life, makes times that much more tough.

We need to get rid of our dependence on oil, but how do we do that when no one wants to pay for new infrastructure or new technology, when the oil companies employ thousands of Americans and make their politicians fat and happy? When George W. first came into office he met with energy leaders to discuss the energy policy of the U.S. He met with Big Oil and only Big Oil.

We need change, getting rid of George W is a start. But is there no solution for the here and now? Every country that’s not OPEC should band together to form NOPEC (”Not OPEC”) and start making some demands.

Guys the oil companies isn’t the problem… in my comment I was not blaming the oil companies for the high prices. Remember, they’re buying at a higher price so their margin is going to be higher. Our government nets more then the oil companies per gallon and what do they do in the process to earn it. Do they drill for it? refine it? dristibute it? retail it? THEY DO NOTHING. Yet they make more money then the oil company. The real problem is OPEC. So until our government decides to do something about it (like drill for example) OPEC will have us by the balls.

Obama wants “off the shelf ethanol” because he’s in bed with corn ethanol producers (ADM, Tom Daschle, and other DC lobbyists). He pretends he’s about change but this is really about good ole beltway connections. His inner circle of energy and environment policy advisors all have big corporate connections who get $Billions in gumment subsidies, who oppose Brazilian sugarcane ethanol with tariffs, and are driving up grain prices, hurting food prices worldwide. Some change.

I think the best way to result all of this fuels matter is that our goverment need to make GAS NATRULIZATION which is the government in charge with the gas price like never let gas price past $3 a gallon. It would be tough because the Oil company run this country.

I agree with “jon.” This is an automotive site, not a political one. And for those of you who think that oil only goes into cars, get real. “Sigma” has a huge point. Almost everything we use on a daily basis is oil-based. We’ll never lose our dependence on oil, but we can lose our dependence on foreign oil, and tell OPEC to go blow. We have reserves in our own country – but the envirofreaks won’t let us tap into them. Go figure. Oops, I’m talking politics… Anybody see the S5 on the roads? Sweet ride.

Fuel economy standards do not change consumer behavior. Fuel prices do. But neither Obama or McCain want to raise petrol taxes to get people into more fuel-efficient vehicles and give the manufacturers a demand to produce to, rather than an arbitrary government regulation that isn’t as considerate to the consumer as the OEMs are in taking the needs of the consumer into the equation with the specifications of the product.

Problem is, neither will raise petrol taxes because it’s political suicide. But it’s the only thing that will get us off petrol the fastest.

Brazil is technically now “energy independent” as they have recently discovered about 30 billion barrels of oil off their shores in a deep-water exploration. Effectively, given their new discovery, current and forecasted demand, and use of biofuel like ethanol they as a nation can tell OPEC to stick it. We don’t have that choice.

The problem we have is that our idiot politicians see the “solution” as a one or the other thing to appease their special interests. It’s either “we must pursue alternatives” or “we must drill.” Everyone knows we must do both. Drilling takes a bit of time, but will provide relief in the medium term, and alternatives will bring relief in the long term. In the short term we have little choice because we are paying the price for politicians preventing the development of our energy infrastructure for the past 30 years.
