As of October GM had a 19.8% share for the year above the 19.5% plan assumption.

If you look after Bankruptcy (July):
August.......19.5%
September.20.9%
October.....21%

and average them you get a 20.5% share, well above the break even point.

I am looking for some positive report outs by GM in a little over a week.

GM just commented that they are, well lets Fritz say it.

"General Motors Co. is outperforming the targets set in its earnings viability plan outlined in April, CEO Fritz Henderson said today.

Henderson declined to list the areas in which GM is outperforming but said the company would provide details in its third-quarter earnings report later this month.

Prior to filing for U.S. bankruptcy protection in June, GM presented a viability plan to the government. The plan assumed GM would have a 19.5 percent share in 2009, with that share stabilizing in the 18.4 to 18.9 percent range in subsequent years. That would come on the back of four core brands -- Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC -- rather than eight brands.

I think the issue may be where you live. Many parts of the country do not buy domestic while other parts only buy domestic. This gives a jaded view of the market.

there are also many who have a very warped idea of the different marques like iwc. I think most knowledgeable people will say GM is average to above average in quality and reliability yet they are many who espouse their biased views even when the data shows differently.

Hmmmm, it strikes me as odd that so many people on here keep saying that no one is buying GM made vehicles. If my reading and arithmetic are correct, GM sold 177,603 vehicles in October. A 4% increase over October 2008. Meanwhile Toyota sold 152,165 cars and trucks in October for a 3.5% decline in sales from October 2008. Please tell me how American's are not buying GM made vehicles when the out sold Toyota last month by 25438 vehicles.

and while i don't want you to be right about the mazda 3, johnny, i'd like to see a breakdown as to whether sales were down across the board (refuting the ugly mug theory a bit) or if the 3 specifically is down compared to other models...

fsvt??? GM share down a lot? After being in bankruptcy, shedding 4 brands it still ONLY lost 1% from the '08 calender year. GM has said they will break even at 18.5% with a 10 million market. We are there. Lets see at the end of the 4th quarter if true.

Now one month of sales really means little BUT they now have 3 months of increasing market share (after bankruptcy). The $4500 cash for clunkers was 2 months ago and the "bring ahead" theory issue seems to be over.

Not saying it is rosy for GM but would rather be up 4% for the month than down 30% like Chrysler and down ~4% like Toyota/Honda.

The good news for the auto industry is that replacement rate is about 11.6 million units so eventually the US will either increase auto sales or the number of vehicles percapita will drop. The question is who is going to do well and who is going away.

The winners will do very well as the weaker competitors crumble. Mitsubishi and Suzuki seem highly at risk. Chrysler needs some mojo soon but it could be a boon to Ford and GM.

Regarding the Camaro and its retro look I think back to the retro Thunderbird. Some people lined up to pay $10,000 over sticker. Less than one year out you could pick one up for $10,000 below sticker. I don't expect the Camaro to be punished like the T-Bird but sales will level out and we'll see ratios similar to the good ol' days when both cars were vying with each other in the 80's and 90's.

fordman is an idiot...take a look at the leadership behind GM and you'll clearly see all of the years of wasted money and why they are in the shape they are in now. I believe in our American cars but after seeing the demise of GM by the arrogance in leadership, I'm ready to stop putting our good tax-dollars into a Government Motor Company. Hey, maybe fordman is really Bob Lutz or Mark LaNeve...possibly even Red-Ink Rick! Get a job...post something worth reading once in a while or just log out completely.

Unfortunately, until next year, Chrysler won't be offering anything new, so sales will be in the dumpster.

Worst time for Chrysler right now.

Ram trucks not doing well as long as gas prices are high (almost $3.00/gal) and with construction industry still in the dumps.

Jeeps need to get better gas mileage. Needs a Pentastar (aka Phoenix) engine.

Actually the TL sold more than 851 cars in Oct. 2.512.Still failing miserably compared to years past. I am always curious to see how many tasteless idiots there are in the US that would actually buy this ugly (IMO) excuse for a car

TL * 2,512 4,340 -44.2% 28,394 39,999 -29.0%

Chrysler's performance was not QUITE as dismal as it might seem. Both minivans were up, and the other so-called core products, 300, Charger, Challenger suffered less that 30% declines. The Grand Cherokee and RAM pickup were slow sellers, however. Remember Chrysler was shut down for several months and Cash For Clunkers wiped out their inventory of smaller cars. The 2010 Caliber and PT Cruiser are just now starting up production. The others are pretty much lame ducks until the new Fiat products are launched. Let's see what thw Wizard of Turin comes up with during today's SIX HOUR press conference.

So we "stabilize" at about the lowest point in 30 years. That's like celebrating your 50% pay cut.

Fordman, Ford made money last qtr. GM is still suckling the public teat like every loser govt run organization, stealing from the public while adding to its downfall.

-25% change from Sep '08 to Sep '09

TOTAL	838,233	838,449	0%	8,654,342	11,603,561	–25%

Toyotas problem is that they over capacitized themselves and have plants sitting and manpower getting paid for not working. Honda did not do that and is doing well.

Correct on the incentives. GM for October had very high incentives, especially on the dead brands:Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn and Saab.

"Long-suffering Saab, which is being sold by GM, has $6,000 to $7,000 dealer incentives on the Saab 9-3 Convertible and Saab 9-5.

Great deals in the way of cash rebates and low-interest financing are available on Pontiacs since GM hopes to wind down the brand by year-end. The Pontiac Vibe and Pontiac Solstice each have a $2,500 rebate or zero-percent financing for up to 72 months.

Similarly, GM is providing dealers with cash incentives that can be passed along to consumers on Saturn models. The Saturn Aura Hybrid, for instance, comes with a $4,000 cash rebate off its $26,000 sticker price. The Saturn division is going out of business since the planned sale to Penske Automotive Group failed. As of Oct. 1, GM had only 12,000 Saturn vehicles left in dealer inventory and the automaker has stopped making Saturns, as it has Pontiacs."

What's really impressive about Ford's numbers is that they dramatically reduced their incentives compared to last year whereas GM had to have huge incentives to move their vehicles. Sales are only one picture Fordman. Profitability is more important than sales as is quality. I'd rather invest and run a leaner and more profitable company than a bigger, less efficient company. To compare, Honda is far smaller than Toyota but does that really matter? I would argue that Honda has the better reputation.

I do feel sorry for Chrysler. Not sure how long Fiat will stick it out with them. Chrysler needs new product to make a change in their sales and they do not have anything new for awhile and it will take 1-2 years to bring in the Fiat cars and rehash the cars they are working on now. Hopefully Fiat can cut cost enough so Chrysler can survive on the sales they have until the new stuff comes out. Otherwise they are toast.

Hope I am wrong.

The important news not shown is market share. Sales increases over a year ago can be misleading since something may have happened to individual marques back then, like special incentives, plnats down, etc.

I believe we will see ford and GM increase market share from the last 6 months.
