When is America gonna get thier head out of thier #@! and put to rest the big bad macho attitude. Bigger is not always better, unless you are trying to compensate. We are no different than any other place in the world. If it works there it will work here! The Americans who will not consider this car are the same ones that buy a 6000 sq. ft. house then can’t afford to put furniture and curtains in it. What satisfaction do you get from that? Oh I forgot it is the “LOOK WHAT I HAVE ATTITUDE…AGAIN!” Common sense tells you if it is priced right, economical, safe and fits your families needs BUY IT!

My husband and I sell these cute Smart cars,(Rajun Cajun Used Cars & Zap of Reno, in Reno, NV.) And they are very cute and very fun to drive. I too had the thought that they may be cute, but how safe are they. “In a collision, the car reacts in a different way than a conventional car. The spherical geometry of the vehicles’s “tridion safety cell” in an aluminim safety cage with steel reinforcements that are designed to hold its shape like the crash cage of a racecar. The light weight combined with wheel wells in the four corners and safety features like dual air bags, anti-lock brakes and more results in a car that is safer than cars much larger than it.”

The other thing is they go 85 mph and though the MPG will vary, it gets on average 40 MPG or more.
Come on America, the rest of the world uses these little cars, and within the next couple of years we will be seeing all kinds of alternative transportation. Why keep feeding the oil mongers by driving the gas hogs year round. How about we become a bit more independant and make the change now. What do you have to gain, money in your pocket from the gas prices, and doing your part to lower the air pollution / green house effect.

Anyway, this vehicle is clearly not going to be bought by those in Midwest states who log lots of miles alongside 18-wheelers. It makes sense, however, for people who live in urban areas where it’s difficult to find even a MINI-sized parking spot at some times of the day. Different strokes for different folks.

As a Canadian Smart driver, I can tell you that the car is great in the city, but it will also keep up with freeway traffic. However, that is not the purpose of the car. The original name for it was “City Coupe” and that is where it works the best. People who sit in it are surprised at how much room there is inside, and I do not feel unsafe while driving it, as it has all the latest safety gear,including ABS and Dynamic Stability Control.
By the way, the 3-lug wheels that reminds Madcapp of the LeCar should come as no great surprise, as the Smart is also made in France!

This car is a second not a first. A town runround not a lond distance cruiser. If you drive a gas guzzler then this would be the perfect car to save you money around town.

65 mpg on petrol and close to 100mpg with hybrid with the same petrol engine. Then there is the diesel hybrid good for 140 mpg. Buying that big engined s-class with a 6 ltr engine won’t be so bad with this around.

SMART makes sense in the city where it seems many people still like to drive trucks and SUV’s.

It is a very safe vehicle than can crash full speed into a concrete wall and not have the cabin crushed at all. Let me see ya’ll do that in yer trucks. However, arguments about SMART’s vs. SUV’s is silly and childish. Collisions at high rate of speed in any vehicle can kill, period.

The Aveo is made in Korea by slitty eyed foreigners you asshole Anonymous, it also scored poorly in Euro NCAP safety tests and given its size its not particularly economical. A Honda Fit or toyota Yaris is a better bet than an Aveo.
Mike, surgeons call motorcyclists organ donors and this car is never going to be bought as a long distance highway car, but to pop down to the market instead of taking the Suburban.
Tha traffic on the 405 does about 25mph anyway, so merging at 35 is recklessly fast.

Point #2 is the only worthwhile argument Mike makes. But then again, I don’t think people who buy the Smart will be looking to do alot of highway driving (its a city car, duh). Also, I believe it’s already been stated that the models coming to the US will have improved performance. I doubt it will match an average street bike, but it may make this point less meaningful.

1) motorcycles require a special license to drive them.
2) Motorcycles power to weight ratio mean a 0-60 of less than 5 seconds in most cases, as opposed to a (current) 0-60 of more than 16 seconds. Don’t know about you, but I do not approve of merging onto the highway at 35mph.
3) Motorcycles leave the driver/rider not only open to the elements, but require the full attention of the driver to stay upright.
4) I have seen many an inattentive driver nearly hit a motorcycle, and I have seen many attentive motorcycle drivers avoid an accident by knowing how to maneuver (between cars or onto a shoulder to avoid being hit)

and the list can go on and on.

Force a motorcycle driver to strap themselves to the bike and I will talk about the dangers, but comparing a bike to Smart is retarded. Please come back when you have a rational, logical thought.

we are not making fun of the safety cell… it works as expected. We are making fun of the way that the 1609lb (730kg) vehicle ricochet’s off of 4000lb vehicles and bounces around the road with reckless abandon.

The Smart won’t kill ya. The G’s, or the second and third vehicles you careen/fly/smash/slide/bounce into will.
