Official: General Motors will build new Camaro; arrives in 2009

08/10/2006, 10:05 AM

By admin

GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced today that GM will build an all-new version of the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car based on the award-winning concept that debuted at the Detroit auto show in January. The concept “ignited the passion of car enthusiasts around the world ever since,” the automaker says — even spurring consumers to start petition drives and send in certified checks in hopes of placing early deposits. The car will go on sale in the first quarter of 2009. New images after the jump…

“The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the Camaro Concept continues to remind me of the uniquely iconic place our products can have in customers’ hearts,” Wagoner said. “Camaro is much more than a car; it symbolizes America’s spirit and its love affair with the automobile.”

The all-new Camaro will begin with early production versions at the end of 2008 and will go on sale in the first quarter of 2009. “The new Camaro will be almost identical to the concept, a thoroughly modern interpretation of the 1969 model, considered by many to be the best design of the car’s first generation,” said Ed Welburn, GM’s global vice president of design, who owns a 1969 Camaro SS. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sport coupe will feature an independent rear suspension, and will be offered in a variety of models with the choice of manual and automatic transmissions and V-6 and V-8 engines.

Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper said the new Camaro will appeal to both men and women, and unite customers with fond memories of previous Camaros with those who first experienced a Camaro when the concept was unveiled in January.

“We intend to make the all-new Camaro relevant to younger buyers while retaining its appeal to current fans,” said Peper. “The beauty of the best Camaros is that they have always been beautiful to look at with performance that rivals expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new-car buyers.”

In fact, the Camaro Concept design team embodies the universal appeal that Chevy envisions for the car: The core team reporting to the lead designer ranges in age from 27-35 and came from all over the world, yet they all had similar experiences growing up with a love for the Camaro and American performance cars. Their concept redefines the Camaro for both existing and new generations of fans in a contemporary way with responsive performance and modern technology.

Peper said Camaro will complement Chevy’s already-popular portfolio of performance vehicles led by Corvette and including its broad SS lineup.

I drive a new-generation 375hp Hemi, and love the hell out of it, but $3.50/gal gas and this incredible summer heat has actually moderated my Detroit-born lead-foot, at least a bit. My big fat V8 gets the same or better mileage than my 205hp V6 did in my SUV, but it still takes its toll when the gas credit card bill comes in each month.

I’m a driving enthusiast, but the overwhelming majority of the auto buying populace isn’t. Why would the friggin Camry be a #1 selling car in this country for years if the facts were otherwise? Make it reliable, make it mildly efficient and even make it boring, and people will still buy it.

I’m all for the new Camero being built, but with gas prices set to take another hike northward, I think GM better hop on the new-muscle car bandwagon quicker than 2009 if its going to be anything for them other than a losing proposition.

By the time this comes out, the redesigned Mustang will be finished and the Camaro and Challenger will be left in the dust.
Retro is good, but people need to move on with cutting edge design and technology, not the past.
Also if gas is gonna go up more by the time 2010 arrives this car will not sell good depending on it’s gas milage. I heard it will get 30 MPG, but I doubt that. Maybe 25, but not 30.
Move on with cutting edge design, technology, and quality not past designs because these designers can’t make anything f*cking worth it.

I just hope that they really are almost identical to the concept. All too often the cars, when they are released, look very little like the concept.

I have to disagree with two statements:
1. The 69 was the best design…Sorry, the 68 was nicer IMHO, the 69 lost it with the flattened rear fenders
2. Camaro performance has always rivaled European GT’s…Sorry, but WRONG! Even in the 60’s!
Come on Mr. Wagoner, let’s be realistic. The only car from that era that “rivaled European GT’s” was the Cobra, and that evolved from a European GT.
The early Camaro was beautiful, for sure, but it was not everything that your P.R. team cracks it up to have been. I know this, because I used to own one.

It is the ultimate driving machine.
A hybrid diesel version will come later with 203 hp and 430 lb-ft or torque, and get 40/38 mpg.
You know it will.

GM dropped the ball on this one.

They HAD THIS CAR, almost exactly the same, resting in the acclaimed 1998/99 Pontiac GTO Concept.

Day late and a dollar short, but I love seeing the f-body reborn. Good to see GM won’t cut corners, as the platform is already developed and is IRS. Handeling should trump the ‘Stang. Interior fit and finnish should trump the stang, engines should trump the v6 and gt v8 available from ford.

it should be a solid offering, given the zeta is as good as has been hyped.

I saw the atual concept back in January at the autoshow. Quite honestly, the pictures make the car look better than it does in person. The entire front is made of plastic — not unlike other car makers, however, the plastic looks too thick and cheap – the kind of plastic that shrouded a cheap 80’s style VCR or BetaMax… I wasn’t very impressed.
I truly hope the production version is improved.

Once again GM fails to deliver.

Case and Point: thing back to the SSR – when the concept came out there was tonnes of buzz – it was an interesting design, and everyone was ready to lay their money down to own one – except for one thing: they took forever to make it available, and now they’ve drastically dropped the MSRP, and the things are sitting on lots around the country. Worse, they took a sport vehicle, and only offered an automatic.

Fast forward to the Camero – a concept with a lot of buzz, and a lot of people who would put down money for the car today if they could. By 2009 it’s very hard to say if the retro look will still be in.

You cannot delay a design that’s based on something that is currently trendy. The risk is VERY high! Meanwhile – all of GM’s competition knows exactly what will come out in 3 years, and is already planning something to top it, and (probably) release before this is even available.

This might be okay if GM had a reputation of under-promising and over-delivering – but sadly this is usually not the case.

GM obviously has a prototype of the Camaro that is VERY WELL recieved by the public and has been for quit a while now so what else are they waiting for ? 2009 is WAY WAY TOO LATE. The challenger will even beat them into the market. how SLOW can they get ? The Mustang was redone in 2005 and beat EVERYBODY AGAIN with the new design as they did in 1965 (actaully 1964 and a half) and they are already planning a counter for the challeneger and the Camaro (assuming it ever does even come out in 2009). Don’t get me wrong I have never been a Ford fan they are Badly underpowered and old suspension technology and have never had ANYTHING to compete with the Corvette ever (except maybe the Cobra but that doesn’t really count as it was more a Carrol Shelby thing than Ford, now Carrol had it going on for sure and still does).. I fear by the time the camaro does FINALLY come out the market will already be saturated with the again resdesigned mustang and the challenger and no room left for the LAST ONE IN LINE again. You Snooze you loose has always been true. I also totally disaggree with the 69 camaro being the best of the gen -1 camaros.. the 67 was the first and the best and smallest and lightest.. I still have one, a 1967 Camaro big block SS and WILL NEVER SELL IT..

I agree they definitely dragged their feet, I’ll still wait, but somewhat disappointed. One+ year more is reasonable but 2+ is ridiculous. Unless this is all a ploy to misinform the competition, seriously doubt that. The only way this may change is hundreds of thousands of angry emails about dragging their feet. It will take a grass roots approach to even hope to change this.

2009 is NOT a terribly bad idea. Currently many people talk about what “low quality crap” GM builds. With the new GMT 900’s and other launch vehicles receiving such great quality reviews, GM is starting to get back on consumers good side. With other near future launch vehicles such as the GMC Acadia, Enclave, etc. GM will improve their reputation and image with quality and be considered by loyal GM consumers as well as Toyota and Honda consumers. By this time more people would be willing to “try” a GM product again and would not associate the poor quality GM from the past with that of the future. In turn this would lead to more people considering the Camaro than today.

BTW….If people want the Camaro over the Challenger they WILL wait an extra 6-8 months after the Callenger comes out to get one.

Sean ,I have an Camaro and a Trailblazer. The problem with the SUV’s that I have and maybe others beside getting 1/4 to 1/3 less gas mileage in general, is that they are mostly driven by people that think they are driving a sports car. Laws of physics are totally different, yet you have the lane changing speeding freaks out there with no regard for anyone else’s safety in a car. The typical the higher up I ride the safer I feel/am mentality. I drive my two cars differently because they handle differently. Some may say it’s all in the driver experience then those same people would need to go back to school. There’s nothing wrong with SUV’s if you have the need for it and treat it properly, much like those funny commercials that came out 3 years ago. It’s a free country enjoy.

As far as the Announcement it’s great but I seriously believed there’s a lot of pissed off fans out there given we have to wait 2 ½ years and maybe even more due to supply problems and or holding off due to outrageous dealer price hikes. It’s going to take a lot of post on GM’s fast lane blog or on their web site to get anything changed.

The problem is though, that by then who knows what the market will be like, especially the current sports car market. I have a 2002 Silver SS, and love it, so I damn sure wanna get me a 2009 Black SS to park in my garage also. If Chevy makes us all wait for that long, then they better get their **** right. Offer the V6, to try and sell tons of them, for all the people that just buy it for the hell of it, like all the thousands of stupid pony’s you see on the road. Then they better make the Z28 with at least a 400hp motor, and they better offer either the current Z06 505hp motor or whatever the hell Z06’s have under the hood come 2009 to go in the SS! Come on Chevy, knock a year off the wait. Till then, Camaro’s will always be Chevy’s one and only badass car.
