Official: GM sells Hummer to Tengzhong

10/09/2009, 2:03 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company has officially signed a definitive agreement to purchase the Hummer brand from General Motors. Hummer’s leadership team will remain in place and the company will be headquartered in Detroit.

For the interim, Hummer will contract with GM to produce the H3 and H3T at the automaker’s Shreveport, Louisiana, assembly plant, while the H2 will continue to be built by AM General in Mishawaka, Indiana. Both plants will be contracted to June 2011, although Tengzhong may extend either contract by one year.

“We are fortunate to have a partner who understands and recognizes the importance of continuing investment in Hummer’s heritage as a U.S.-based and branded company with a view toward capitalizing on global opportunities,” said Hummer CEO James Taylor, who will remain in his position with the Chinese ownership. “Backed by a privately owned and well-capitalized company, we are going to be able to focus on providing customers with more efficient models that deliver HUMMER’s promise of authentic, purpose-built design and engineering.”

Tengzhong will purchase Hummer through an investment entity, which will own an 80 percent stake in the automaker. The remaining 20 percent will be owned by Suolang Duoji, a private entrepreneur. In addition to acquiring the rights to manufacture Hummer vehicles, Tengzhong will receive the Hummer distribution network.

Take all of the Hummer crap with you. We no longer have a need for them here in the states. All the rappers and senseless jackasses have already purchased enough of them. It had unsuccessfully ran its course here on the States side.

I did always feel the H2 was a cheap plastic version of the Tahoe/Yukon (metal-bodied) twins

Pretty sure H2’s are metal bodied… Hummer sells magnetic covers for the doors so you don’t scratch them while off roading. That would require metal.

I have never been a fan of the Hummer brand. But when it was first created, it did have a purpose. That purpose was a military vehicle that could go just about anywhere off the road. (provided the body of the vehicle was not too wide…) For that purpose it did quite well. As for H3 and H3T, the H3 was not too bad a vehicle, but the H3T is a hidous monstrosity. Hopefully all goes well for their new owners, and the Hummer division. I would like to start seeing more jobs created rather than more jobs lost.

For a limited time, every Hummer sold in China comes with 4 free phonebooks so the driver can see over the wheel. Not that it’ll make them drive any better.

Yes, a lot of rappers and people that didn’t need these bought them in their heydey. But I live in the midwest where there was a lot of flooding last year. It was something to see the Hummer Club of America going out in the floods with their H1’s and H2’s, rescuing people form their homes and businesses. Police couldn’t get to them, so all these volunteers from the Hummer Club and the local Hummer dealership came out on their own. All the people screaming for the death of these huge vehicles because they cause “global warming” were now so thankful to be rescued from their flooded homes. Too bad their Priuses were getting shorted out in the flood waters.

cheers gta89mike! i agree, these cars are indeed purpose built, i mean other than the jeep in it’s beginnings, these cars are war machines! they can withstand bombs and everything, on the other side, those floods from global warming … well it is pretty safe to say that those hummers gave a pretty big contribution to global warming, with their 0.0000008 miles per gallon… great recreational vehicle, great war machine, great rescue vehicle, unpractical method of transportation…

a chinese hummer could prove to be confusing for some… and also entertaining

i like how Hummer was the big **** not too long ago, and now people are now all “good riddance” to the brand… i was never a fan of the H2, driving it was quite fun though, and i did think the H3T was interesting.. but to see all these people start hating something that was near perfectly American is amusing yet not surprising.. everyone else’s fault but mine/ours lives true

Now it is Chevy’s turn to off load some dead weight too. Chevy has more Corvette lineup than family sedan. They only have the Malibu and Impala as midsize/fullsize family sedan. The rest are trucks and Vett lineup and commercial vans. And they need to get rid of the HH9, hella ugly car, dont even know why that car make it to the market, even uglier than most pontiac

The only Hummer I ever thought was cool sported a .50 caliber heavy machine gun on top, or a 40mm grenade launcher. I was not impressed by the countless sheeple who bought the H1, then the H2, then the H3 and drove them around town as daily drivers.

Can’t wait to see what the Chinese do to Hummer… This might be funny to watch.

@floor_it

Another interesting fact is that most rich/wealthy Japanese people in their native country have a huge love for American cars (mostly big SUV’s and muscle cars), way more than most Americans themselves would.

Same thing that applies to rich people in the Middle East as well, like the UAE and Saudi Arabia. They love big American cars as well.

@stix – Been to Japan twice…the Japanese have a huge love for American culture. Saw auto shops that specialize in old American iron. There is a sizeable Mustang presence in the Tokyo area…saw low riders (made with American cars) in Sapporo. Lots of Jeep owners too.
