SUPERMARIO: I own a 93 NSX red/black hard top coupe. A true thoroughbred with excellent handling and superb power to weight ratio. The NSX was originally designed to compete head on with the Ferrari F355 Berlinetta back in the early 1990s and she achieved her mission bulls eye. Here was an all aluminum, hand made super car from Honda in Japan that was a joy to drive, superb traction & handling, amazingly quick and agile and adequate power from a V-VTEC V-6. She had the highest power output for a V-6 in the world at the time of her inception. This pushed Ferrari back to the drawing boards to conceive the F360 Modena in 1999 as a replacement for their F355 which was no match for the virtually maintenance free NSX and a superior car hands down. But this is when Honda lost the super car race!!! Instead of fitting a Formula proven V-8 that Honda was a repeat champion of inside the exotic looking NSX, they go and replace the pop-headlights with fixed headlights that ruined the original look of such a beautiful precision built and well designed machine. We now had the NSX stoop down to looking like a Mitsubishi Eclipse!!! Whereas Ferrari left Honda (Acura) in the dust with a further upgrade over the F360: the F430 Scuderia in 2004. Honda had no option but to stop production of the NSX in end 2006. Now they are contemplating something even uglier than the frog-eyed NSX: with ugly, angular lines that had zero aesthethic appeal to even a whino at a stop light!!! I also own a 95 Lamborghini Diablo VT coupe in black/ tan interior. Now that is a true exotic, classic. 500 HP on a V-12 with 4 wheel Viscous Traction; another case in point: my Diablo blows away the current Murcielagos, Gallardos & Reventons standing still. She roars like a raging bull and is in a class all on her own. Who cares if the current models have 100HP more
They are Audis dressed up in "borrowed feathers". The real and classic exotic Lamborghinis will always be the original hand made Italian Diablos, Countachs and Miuras. Likewise my 3rd car, a red/tan Ferrari F430 Scuderia will blow away any futuristic Honda (Acura) NSX; a real disgrace to the original NSX I cherish. Change just for the sake of change is a shameful waste if beauty and function do not roll together.

JJT: "there's more of a chance of Monica Sweetheart getting n2 the Pro Football hall of fame than there is of Touyota making a true porsche competitor!"

That's a very ignorant assumption... I certainly wouldn't dismiss the possibility in the near future. But true to your mission of posting hate comments about Toyota and Honda, probably while getting paid to do so, I must say you're gonna need to elaborate a bit if you want someone to take you seriously.

Interesting that people have been clamoring for a V8 for the lackluster RL, now Honda will go to a V10 for the NSX. Maybe we'll see a little cross-platform magic for both cars in 2010? The NSX version could be tuned for high RPMs and HP, while the RL could get the grunty torque stumper...

Blakkar does that make AMG, American 6.3 Liter.

It is imperative that the car follow the last cars philosophy of ultra-light, rear-mid engine layout and some high-tech. They introduce V-tec on the last one.

V-10s suck, Honda makes V-8 for IRL and F1, WTF.
this needs a DirectInjection, variable turbo, VVT 4-valve, automated manual, arbon fiber everywhere.

It should be a Honda of course!

I mean, it is a honda, and that's what it should be called.

jdepould: "I think Honda will sell every car they intend to."

I think they'll deliberately make fewer than they can sell.

The NSX was always down on power, but it still holds a bunch of track records. It was never about the horsepower, and that's part of the reason it never really caught on in the States. Japan doesn't really have long straight highways where flat-out is an option (not that doing it in the States is safe, considering speed enforcement these days). The thing about Honda is that they're pretty good at figuring out demand and producing the right number of cars, so they don't have inventory sitting on lots. I bought an Si a few months ago, the dealership had four when I went in, and they were all spoken for by the time I closed my deal. I ran into my neighbor at the dealership, he got one the next week. The NSX isn't going to be a smash hit with lines around the block, but I think Honda will sell every car they intend to.

Sounds to me like there are a few too many fish in the ol' Koi pond. The original NSX succeeded because it was a purposeful design that was the best of both worlds: it looked exotic but drove like mom's Accord. But of course such a simple mission statement cannot possibly work in the 21st century.

I wouldn't give up hope quite yet CA36. I'm willing to bet someone at the top had to grab a few project managers by their wontons and rein them in a little. And that's what scares me: the longer these things drag on, the more they tend to stray off course.

Considering we've been hearing about this fantasymobile since before the old NSX even stopped production, and we've been looking at the same featureless concept for almost 5 years, I'm gonna go ahead and file this under "when hell freezes over".

I'm not in the market for a 4-door, i have 4 kids, so whatever we get will have to seat at least 6. sadky, MPG is also a consideration. I've decided on the Mazda5, but the family wants a kia Rondo (driving it felt like driving my '99 Oldsmobile)

I looked at a Chevy Colorado, but it won't seat six adults, or even 2 adults, a teen and three small kids

Ya i like the Charger too, it has that mean look with the power to back it up but didn't they change it to the Advenger, i really don't like the Advenger its not as wide has a smaller motor and dosen't look mean. If i concider geting a Charger i could get a used 2005-2006 charger. i should even look at a crysler 300 to. I will take your advice and take the three of them for a test drive at the dealer ship on thursday. I will tell ya what i got in the end.

I like the dodge charger, but I'm only 6' and 180 pounds.

If you've decided on the 'Lac, that's cool.
If you're still looking, figure out what type of car you want, and drive at least 3 competing models

Ya the car has ok seats for its width but i can fit into it better than my camaro. (that i sold this morning for 14,500.) but i happen to be 6'5 and 194lbs so it is kind of hard to fit into any car. heck it was hard to fit into a T-62 when i was in the army. Even my 14 year old son has a hard time fiting into cars. He is big himself 6'1, 176lbs. so i may get a car that is a little bigger. I just wanted to get a car thats a family car that has the power of a sports car. if you have any ideas for what i should buy just let me know.

Blakkar:

I actually prefered the 300ZX and 300GT VR-4 to the NSX, but liked all 3. RX-7 was OK, while the the Supra didn't work for me.

As far as price for performance, yes, they all beat the NSX.

The 300ZX of that ere remains the best japanese car ever.

Now, Honda is guilty of building its faux-luxury divisions cars from accordsn and civics, but the NSX wasn't siply an accord.

"Z-ride," is my way of acknowleging that the old 240Z launced the japanese "sports car" in the in the USA movement.

It doesn't mean a Nissan. it mean's a high-tech performance car, and it's a lot shorter to type than "high-tech performance car."

If I had the dough, i'm going ferrari.

If I have some of the dough, I'm going Vette.

If I'm poor and finnaly freed of minivan Hell: I'm going camaro

Jackjimturkey,

I think I see what you are trying to say. That doesn't mean I agree with you or that I think you are right. Your views on these various cars is very simplistic and shows that you do not really know the cars that you speak of.

This does not mean you don't know, but rather you are not saying anything to express that you do know.

Until the C5, the Corvette was pretty much a two-seater muscle car. After that, the Corvette was a true world class sports car that has only improved. The VIPER made it's claim with that huge engine but is still one of the fastest cars around (around corners too). Big engines are the American way and I think the HONDA will err in that direction as well, though not as greatly, which is the Japanese model. But don't expect some 3.0L V10 (most reports say 5.0L) if you are looking for tiny racing engines made of watch parts. American sports cars still win the horsepower-per-dollar war easily and that's not going to change.

The 911 is as cutting edge as a stealth fighter jet, which is actually a pretty scary thought. The only thing "old school" about the car is that it is still billed as the 911. If Porsche were going to stick with accurate naming, the car would be called the 998 now.

I won't knock your feelings about the NSX, but I doubt HONDA, who seems to have a problem with legacy cars (their's being the Accord and Civic), will actually name this new car NSX, but that is maybe the only name that seems to fit it right now. At least fans and the press seem to think so.

The NSX was not really that high tech. At the time for the money it did have the then fairly unique ABS and traction control (optional if it was offered at all) but was soundly accused of but later acquitted of having a beefed up Accord transaxle (not a far cry from the Vector W8 - which used a modded Toronado transaxle and a big, twin turbo, Chevy v8). The car had a not to unusual engine for the time, Vtec didn't show for a couple of years but was one of the few upgrades made over the cars 15 year trudge into obsolescence (the C4 went 13 years before giving way to the C5).

The NSX was barely a match for it's Japanese rivals, it lacked power handling the 300Z was quicker and faster. The turbo "FD" RX-7 was quicker and more nimble than the NSX. The 3000GT was... the only car the NSX couple actually beat off the lot. It was too heavy and underpowered to that weight to be anything but cool.

Add to that that all those cars cost half as much as the NSX and the feeling that this car was put together with Accord parts and you have a car that was an "also ran" not a contender. It's "exotic-ness" was based on the fact that no one, outside of Japan, would pay almost $90K in 1990 or so for a Japanese car. Even the Lexus LS went for only about $40K+. If the cost were in line with it's rivals it might have had a happier run.

Also don't use "Z-ride" it sounds like you live in your own little world. Every fan boy and car expert and even the execs at Nissan call it the "Z-car" or just "THE Z".

blakkar:

My post vanished, so I'll put it up again, approximately.

Vette and Viper are NA big-block sports cars. Balls-out displacement is their game.

the 911 is old-school, and its look is essentially the same as 25 years ago.

I'm opposed to calling something with a front engine an NSX.

What was wrong with HSC, if they're not going to give the car an actual name?
NSX is a high-tech performance car (a Z-ride). It was a match, at its outset, for the 300zx and 3000GT VR-4. The (JDM) RX7 and Supra fit in there, too.

What set the Honda apart was its "exoticness." they made a wise decision not to mass-produce it, and it gets more attention.

I was sad to see the NSX follow the other Z-rides out of production. Go. Ditto the Ford GT, which is somewhere between sports car and full exotic.

I’m opposed to calling something with a front engine an NSX.

What was wrong with HSC, if they’re not going to give the car an actual name?
NSX is a high-tech performance car (a Z-ride). It was a match, at its outset, for the 300zx and 3000GT VR-4. The (JDM) RX7 and Supra fit in there, too.

What set the Honda apart was its “exoticness.” they made a wise decision not to mass-produce it, and it gets more attention.

I was sad to see the NSX follow the other Z-rides out of production. Go. Ditto the Ford GT, which is somewhere between sports car and full exotic.

^^Somewhat. The Mazda Miata I usually think of a little bit more road mannered than a S2000, without the high redline and all. The Mazda Miata's more of a fun car, while the S2000 is a purists car. Although I suppose they might if the Miata had an engine like the S2000's, the S2000 is in a different price range.
And the Corvette isn't balls out power, it may have been concerning the first few generations but now it's more... ehh track mannered I suppose?

I wouldn't really consider Porsche as competition... When Porsche 911/928 comes to mind, I think of those cars as more premier than the NSX... But that's just me.

The s2000 is just honda's version of the miata. I hate that entire class.

The vette and viper are big-block sports cars, with balls-out power. The porsche is a different kind of sports car, but still not too complicated.

The NSX is a high-tech performance car. It's not going to go 200, but it'll do great in handling tests.

You can get a Porsche Carrera 4S for 100k and that would probably be a strong comparison for the NSX V10 w/ SH-AWD.

Z06ified nailed it on the head. They need to release the car now before the market moves soo far ahead that they won't be able to compete.

At 80k+ price point that car better be spectacular. Even the Nissan Skyline GTR is going to have trouble against the Blue Devil Vette. I can't see this NSX faring any better. my $.02

How do you figure? Is it price? That has very little to do with it.

You might what to explain because those ARE the cars that this HONDA will have to compete against, not just for race position but garage space.

Also you're statement was better aimed at the S2000. That was a car truly by itself. $40K, four-cylinder racing engine, low weigh, small... nothing was and really is in it's class (maybe the Porsche Cayman/Boxster).

This new "NSX" is not going to be so unique. SH-RWD (AWD is still up in the air but unlikely) aside, it is not so far out of place. Yes it is likely to cost over 100K, but price still is not the issue. The Vette and the Viper both list for under 100K and they are widely acknowledged as being world class sports car performers (lack of luxury appointments not withstanding).

As for the 350Z,

The 300Z ran into the problem of costing WAY too much for what it was. Besides, the 350Z is aimed at a younger, less well heeled, individual, much like the original 240Z. Most Japaneses sports cars tend to fall into that circle for being there for the "kids". That's one of the things I love about them, they build a car with heaps of potential but let you decide what you're going to to do with it. Strap on turbos, upgrade the suspension, brakes and so on. A lot like muscles cars, just with slightly under-equipped sports cars instead of bigger performance coupes and sedans.

Again you might want to clarify your last statement. What are you trying to say what "'Vette, Viper and 911/928 don't really fit here. The NSX could have it's field all to itself. "

Until the car ships, I reserve judgment. But I do not have high hopes for this car.

I expect that this car, like so many Japanese sports cars in the past (a couple of them HONDAs), will read as hot contenders, like beautiful of the camera, but fall flat in the face of real competition for one reason or another.

I'd ALMOST wager that:
- The C7 Corvette is better balanced and just more powerful and we haven't touched on the Z06/7 yet.
- The Porsche (928 or 911 pick one) is more agile and quicker.
- The LF-A is more refined and looks cooler, while the new V8 Supra is just as good and the HONDA but has a back seat
- The Viper just has a better attitude for a V10 sports car. (They need to start working of a third generation car now)

I want to see HONDA do good by this car but all signs point to, "don't get your hopes up".

Scar:

never try to compare a honda to a BMW. It's like comparing Rosanne to Shakira.

The honda is inferior -- it's like Hughes middle school against BMW's New england patriots.

just skip it.

The NSX was a decent car, but at that time you also had the 300GT VR-4 and the last 300ZX, not to mention the underrated RX7 and the Supra
