Official: Pontiac G8 body returns… as special-edition Holden Commodore

10/01/2009, 11:58 AM

By Andrew Ganz

This isn’t quite the reborn Pontiac G8 most Americans had in mind: Confirming last month’s rumors, Holden, General Motors’ Australian subsidiary, has announced a new special edition version of its Commodore sedan built using leftover Pontiac G8 body panels.

The new Commodore SS V-Series Special Edition will be available in sedan, wagon and pickup “Ute” versions – the latter of which will closely resemble the stillborn Pontiac G8 ST.

“The SS V-Series Special Edition will boast a new aggressive twin nostril front fascia with unique lower splitter and twin letter-box hood scoops,” Holden said in a statement.

Holden didn’t release any equipment details, although a six-speed manual will be standard. Pricing starts at $47,490 Australian – or about $41,500 USD.

They’ll go on sale in Australia in November and will be available in three colors: Phantom black, Red Hot and Voodoo blue. The Ute will make its official debut at the Deni Ute Muster, a Holden Ute enthusiast gathering tomorrow.

Funny I was reading about this elsewhere this morning wondering if LLN would even mention it.

The pickup we were hoping would come to the US as a Pontiac. So close yet so far…. Wagon looks sharp too. I like it better than the new Caddy esp the back.

I suppose they had to do something with the leftovers.

I still think GM should have kept Pontiac around just for the G8 and Solstice.

Cant they just screw these panels onto a chevy cobalt and sell it as a special edition?

That requires a long and complex answer involving that plat’s capacity; the unwillingness of the UAW to import any more volume than a certain number; the death of the parent brand; and the overlooked fact that Delta and Zeta are two different things.

A liberals best comeback:
“Well your leader went and tried to destroy another country for no good reason.”

A conservatives best comeback:
“Well your leader went and tried to destroy OUR country for no good reason.”

Which one of those (childish but somewhat true statements) is better Lefty?

It’s no wonder why General Motors is in the shape it’s in.

1) drop Oldsmobile
2) drop Pontiac
3) drop Saturn
4) drop Hummer
5) introduce a dull “design-by-committee” vehicle and don’t change it for years. Then stand around wondering why it’s not selling.
6) bring to sell in the USA only a sedan, and not other styles. Australia gets them!

…. and they will continue to make these mistakes. How do they expect their sales to improve if they don’t have any cars to sell?

Ok looks like i jumped the gun or maybe read this LLN articel the wrong way….but we in australia will be getting updated ssv series cars, ute and wagons….NOT Pontiac badged and fascia as i thought after reading this LLN article..

i thought it a bit weird they would badge the commodore as a pontic in the same country…ahwell i like the update….looks good enough on paper to me…

here is the aussie article….

Smegley what are you talking about? I hate GM and American cars unless they are pony cars, the G8 or supercars. Lest not forget the Fisker Karma and Tesla. They can keep the rest of their sh!t

@Smegley: the public told the free-market they didn’t want fast fun cars years ago when everybody kept buying big boring bloated SUVs…

Don’t believe the hype.

We could go into a huge discussion about how the general American public sees the car as an appliance or accessory…just look at the offerings available in many other countries, even by our own American companies.

It seems obvious to me that this car should come back as a four door Camaro.
If BMW can sell their 3 series as anything from M3 coupes to station wagons then so can Chevrolet with this sporty car.
The Camaro has been a hugh sucess and they can build on the great looks but make it slightly more convenient.
Do it GM!!!!
