Official: Volkswagen Tiguan to arrive in 2008

07/20/2006, 10:25 AM

By admin

Volkswagen has officially named its forthcoming compact SUV “Tiguan,” the automaker announced today. The selection was made following a poll of over 350,000 European car enthusiasts. VW says a “clear majority” picked the name over the other possible alternatives, which included Nanuk, Namib, Rockton, and Samun. The Tiguan will arrive in 2008, the automaker said in its announcement. The car is based on the Concept A, first shown in February. Volkswagen also released an official design sketch of the car, which can be seen after the jump…

Another unpronouncable VW name…at least it’s better than Rockton, though.

Ok, I choose “Tiguan” if the other names are Nanuk, Namib, Rock****, Cacan, etc. Where do marketing guys receive the inspiration from for giving names to cars? Smoking pot?

Too bad it will break down as soon as you drive it off the lot. When was the last time you heard of an American car having quality issues?

JS, good list but you forgot the most famous auto naming error ever – the Chevy Nova =

Nova = No Va = No Go = not a good way to sell reliability

At least the name won’t be confused with any other car unlike the ones who have letters and numbers. I hope they can stay true to the concept because too many vehicles lose their punch when translated from showfloor to showroom.

What’s with the name? I’m sure they will go with it for a few months, and then the new ad guys will rename it “Bobcat” or some other small fast fuzzy creature.

Maybe here in America they can change the name to like Kanga, or Kangaroo or something silly like that, since they feel the need to go back to Rabbit and all.

GMrules, did anyone ever heard about american cars having issues? Hell yes, more than you could count every day. VW did chose a crappy name, it won by a “clear majority” but all others names where just worst!

Josh you suck, this looks nothing like a ****ty Sky. I thought Namib was a cool name. We already have the renault Kangoo in Europe. Tiguan is a ybrid of Tiger and Iguana. At least VW didn’t take an old GM Europe name (Calibra) and then spell Calibre wrong out of it. Speaking of Calibres how about shooting Dodge Calibers with .45s?
