$4.00/Gallon was the US high? Canadians are almost paying that much right now. Two-thirds of the world's countries are currently paying more than Americans. No wonder so many people drive SUVs and trucks. I would too.

Where exactly did I say my ideas were original?

And you forgot one big factor, probably the biggest, and certainly the most important in the short term AND long term: Conservation.

I think someone like's to listen to himself speak. I won't repeat myself and for the sake of everyone else I won't ask you to either. I will ask you however to think about the points I stated recalling how George W. Bush attempted to relieve oil prices and many other parallel problems and how exactly they differ from what you stated in the 6th paragraph of your epic speech beginning with "Long term...".

Domestic Drilling.
Refining.
Nuclear energy.

Seems your ideas aren't so original after all.

Let me qualify that "We could easily eliminate the need to buy foreign oil" bit. When I say "easily" I mean "by a wide margin", not "with little effort". It will take fantastic effort. And lots of money. And terrific resolve. Sadly, I don't think America is up to the job. The right will fight change simply because it's change, and the left will fight change because it isn't the (imaginary) perfect solution they dream about (they'll fight every nuke, every windmill, every coal mine, etc).

And lest some brain dead moron state the typical and moronic "Why should we change when China/India use more energy, pollute more, etc" reasoning (if you could attach the word "reasoning" to something so unreasonable), I put forth these very simple analogies: If your neighbour covered his lawn in garbage would you cover your own, or would you make that much more effort to make your yard look better? If your neighbour's toilet emptied directly onto the street, would you have yours enter there as well? Of course not. Or hopefully not, anyway, though I've no doubt there are plenty of troglodytes out there who would be happy with just such an arrangement. My point is this: Just because your neighbour acts the fool is no excuse to act foolish yourself. If China and India are wont to gobble up all the world's energy, that's all the more reason to look for alternatives at home.

Typical LLN Poster, you should change your user name to "Typical_Rightwing_Idiot". Opening up all the wilderness in the world and building a refinery on every corner could not achieve in ten years what high prices achieved in two months. There is so much oil sitting in barges and tanks right now thattraders don't know what to do with it. Refineries have cut production because there is no place left to store the product they're making but are unable to sell. These surpluses, and the low prices that resulted from them, did not come about by arctic drilling or building more refineries. In fact, they came about in the face of REDUCED supply, as OPEC has cut production by over 4 million barrels per day from last year's peak. These surpluses came about by one means and one means only: People started using less oil. That's it. No credit whatosever can go to Bush. It got too expensive, people cut back on demand, supply surged (even as OPEC cut back on supply), and prices dropped. It may have been coincidence that the price tumble happened when Bush was (finally, and thankfully) shown the door, but I can assure you that neither Bush nor his insane policies, both domestic and foreign, had anything whatsoever to do with the price drop.

You may think the driving force behind my ideologies is global warming, but you'd be 100% dead wrong. The driving force behind my ideologies are A) National security and B) No matter how far your right-wing head is driven into the ground, there is only so much oil in there to drill, and the rarer it gets the more expensive it's going to be to find and produce.

Let's address (A) first. Right now, every tank of gas you put in your big, stupid SUV subsidizes governments of countries that are a threat to your very way of life. You're financing terrorists. You're financing leftists. These people greedily take your money at every fill up while plotting ways to make you dead (and in many ways, carrying out those plots). You're also financing crazy-ass decadent building projects on the other side of the world. One would think that Americans, especially the right wing nut jobs that can't seem to see past the end of their collective noses, would be screaming mad about this. Instead they get screaming mad at any suggestion that might lessen it. As always, though, change might mean it affects the status quo, and we all know how conservatives react to change (until it is too late).

Now for (B). Some day that oil will run out. It may happen in our lifetime, it may not. I would prefer to think that my children, or my children's children, will not die in a war over energy. As much as it would be smart to start doing something about it now, it would be extremely stupid to wait until disaster is at hand. We need to do several things to put this day off as far into the future and to lessen the impact of this day when it comes.

Short term, the ONLY way to do both is to reduce consumption of this very precious and very limited resource. High prices are the only way to do that, as was proven beyond any doubt last summer. Prices WILL be high from here on out, you can bet on it (but sadly enough, too many of you will bet against it). You have a choice. Pay too much and send your money to south America and the middle east, or pay too much and keep your money in your own country to keep your way of life.

Long term, of course, conservation will not work because even at a reduced consumption rate it will still eventually be depleted. Alternatives must be found. There are no magic bullets here, so single answer. The answer lies in many places. Wind and solar are the choice of the lefties, but that is not enough. However, just because it is not enough does not mean it should be ignored completely. We must use what wind and solar energy is available for our use. This is but one side of a many-faceted solution. We must also look at the resources we have. We import billions upon billions of barrels of energy from hostile nations while an abundance of it sits under our feet. Global warming be damned, we NEED to start using the coal, oil and natural gas that is right here. We also need to invest in nuclear energy.

Between conservation, tidal, wind, solar, hydro, nuke, coal, natural gas and domestic oil we could easily eliminate the need to buy any foreign oil at all.

Unfortunately, as long as oil remains cheap, we will never seek alternatives. You only need look at how the sales of hybrids have faltered to see how people only care about energy crises when their wallet is involved. If oil is cheap who's gonna pay for all of that other technology?

Hateful - I understand Barrack's motivation, and I disagree with it. I don't believe the government should be artificially manipulating prices through taxation for ideological reasons. Of course the primary ideology here being global warming which is a complete sham. Why don't we tax electricity to hell and make that unaffordable too? When will there be enough taxes? Do we keep raising taxes for decades until the same scam scientists that brought us the global warming BS say we altered the earth's climate back to cooler temp?

I'll never understand the 'punish THEM!' mentality. The ends never justify the means.

Bimmer, you haven't been to Georgia and I was. All former Soviet Republics have large Russian population. Similar situation (actually much worse) is in Republic of Moldova (former Romanian province annexed after WWII), where Russians just grabbed part of the country and declared independent republic within independent republic. How Osetia and Abhazia constitute Russian domain is clear only to Cuba and Venzuela, but the rest of civilized (Western) world did not buy an argument. Surprisingly to you even France (not exactly Bush ally) was up in arms regarding this land grab.
Also, Abhazia and Osetia are known for banditry, while Georgia is working very hard on its democracy. In this part of the world it is difficult task for only 5 million people surrounded by bandits on 2 sides and "caring" Russians on another. BTW, the war was not about view Russian citizend (FYI Stalin killed 20 millions of them, as much as Hitler), it was about oil. Georgia is a passage way of Baku oil to West Europe bypassing Russian pipelines. This is money, Putin and Medvedev are former commie KGB spies, but they like USD as much as Marxism.

Typical_LLN_Poster, there is methods to the madness. By keeping the gas prices at a certain level, you're ultimately going to push people towards buying more fuel efficient vehicles. Whether it's a hybrid, fuel cell, electric, etc. He's banking on that sort of technology to make us a model to the rest of the world. If gas prices remain low, nobody will invest in this type of tech, so setting a minimum is nessecary.

Thunder Chicken, lol! If only the world thought more like you... Too funny. Any way, let's start with the many attempts to open other domestic areas for drilling. That's a biggie. Then we can move to pushing for new refineries. Another biggie. How about pushing to build the first nuclear energy plant in over 30 years and still counting? Yep, another good one. The list goes on buddy.

Hating all politics seems cute and wise but all it shows is a lack of conviction for anything. A cop out, a mental midget lacking the ability to understand... who knows. But before you go and put on your next big display of passive aggressive ambivalence, do yourself a favor and stop watching Katie Couric for your current events. Had you been a person of real insight you may have been able to speak intelligently about the true differences between the two presidents and not come off as such a jack @ss.

Not like anyone has a say anyways. We have as much control over the price of oil as we have over the sun. It is what it is- get a fuel efficient car cuz it ain't getting any cheaper.

Borat, if you weren't brainwashed by Western Media, you would know that the only reason Russia moved in is to protect their citizen from Georgian government (backed by Bush). Georgian president is(was) Bushes puppet (so is Ukrainian). People who live in Southern Osetia and Abhasia regions are Russian citizens. And requested independence from Georgia during collapse of Soviet Union (back in 1991). So, when Georgia invaded their territory citizens asked for protection from Russian government, since they're Russian citizens. Just watch the documentary titled 'war 080808', then open your mouth about Russia.

P.S. I'm not Russian, before you start accusing me of anything.

Well folks if you listen to Boone Pickens this is only the start, the tipping point HAS been reached. I am sure that if we could actually see the real figures of reserves left in Saudi Arabia we all might soil our pants and beg for those tiny cars that everyone makes fun of. All it would take to solve this problem for us is a simple thing like requiring ALL cars run on CNG by 2015. The technology exists and works. Look America if you really want to bring the oil producing countries to their knees then this would be the answer.

Bimmer, there is aways a "cause" when a soldier from one country invades another. If you were reading newspapers about the same time last year, Russian soldiers were 25 miles from Tbilisi - the capital of Georgia (FYI, no they were not near Atlanta, there is a country near Black See called Georgia), and it is was not on your mind!

Kind of weird that everyone in the oil companies is blaming a shortage. We all know there are tankers on both coasts of the US and in the gulf full of oil to be empties but the refineries have no room to offload to store the oil. I got back last week from Texas and toured by air some of the tankers that were sitting there because of nowhere to go.
But let everyone in America let the oil companies put blinders on the people.

The new motto for Americans is keep me "Deaf, Dumb and Blind"!!!!!

Typical LLN Poster: What, exactly, did Bush do to keep prices down? Was it that "resist laws requiring better fuel economy" policy of his? Was it that "Let's invade the middle east and create even more instability in the world's largest producing region" idea? Please, inform us. I'd love to hear it. I'd also love to hear your excuses for his spectacular failure in keeping prices down, since it was under his watch that they achieved record highs.

The American public seems to be a collection of idiots. They cry when gas prices go up (even though it's their own fault for wasting so much), then they cry when a Repugnantican government doesn't do anything to help them, then they cry even louder when a Democrat government tries. Seriously, you people need to see gas at eight bucks a gallon. Seems that's the only thing that makes you pull your heads out of your asses (as proven by the collapse of truck sales when it hit $4/gal last summer).

What a racket. When the price of a barrel was $147 last summer it was around $4.19/gal for 87 octane in my area. Next time it's $150 we will be paying $6.15/gal.

I think oil last year same time was already over $100/barrel. Early last fall it hit over $140. Russians are crying for higher prices: at $35-40/barrel they could not afford bullets to invade anyone. And their dear friends from Venezuela were not able to afford to buy choppers and tanks and to pay his henchmen to kill opposition in the thick of the night.

The difference between Bush and Obama, Bush worked to keep prices as low as possible. Obama is working to jack them up. He's already stated he feels gas prices should stay at $4/gallon. Before his tenure ends in the next 3.5 years, if gas does not reach $4/gallon and stay, expect to see a tax to artificially keep it to a minimum of $4.

It's too bad the price of gas fell off its $4/gallon high in the first place. Although nobody likes paying through the nose for gas, it would be a small price to pay if it would wipe out production of SUV's.

And, while we are on the price of gas, I distinctly recall that many of you semi-cretins and knuckle-draggers were predicting with absolute certainty that the price of gas would hit $5/gallon by this Summer.

Wow, someone from the oil industry is floating the idea out there that oil will hit $250 eventually.

This has the same effect as a Sheik with a toothache. Everyone panics, speculators (aka crooks) see an opportunity and gas and oil prices go up.

The world economy will recover, fuel prices will rise again, economies will crash again, oil goes down, etc.. Where have we seen this before?
