Only 160 examples of the Lexus LFA North American-bound

11/24/2009, 9:21 AM

By Drew Johnson

It seems with every passing day a little more light gets shed on Toyota’s first true supercar, the Lexus LFA. On Monday we learned that Lexus will only offer two-year leases on the LFA, with Tuesday bringing us word of planned volume for the North American market.

Lexus is scheduled to produce 20 units of the LFA per month for 25 months, netting a total production run of 500 cars. The LFA will be sold in a number of global markets, leaving only 160 examples of the supercar for the North American market.

Of those 160 units, 150 are earmarked for the United States market. As Lexus will be providing tools and trained technicians to service the LFA, any Lexus dealer can sell the $350,000 coupe. However, there won’t be a dealer stock of LFAs, with every example required to be a customer order.

The remaining 10 units will be set aside for the Canadian market, according to Edmunds. Early reports suggest the LFA’s two-year lease will cost about $10,000 a month north of the border. That monthly fee will include interest, tax and insurance.

Customers will have the option to buy the LFA off-lease following the completion on the two-year lease agreement.

So $240,000 lease for a toyoda. Hahaha.. I heard only a hand full of people in the United States pre-ordered this car. Its some what of a joke for people that purchase supercars. Sure its a bad ass car. But, its a freaking toyota. And that equals granny autos, and crappy trucks. Not supercars.

I thought a lease is supposed to be cheaper than a purchase. So you pay $240,000 over two years plus a down payment; you’ve practically bought the car already.

I’ll bet my entire portfolio of zip-tie stock that when all is said and done Toyota will end up producing significantly more than 500 LFAs worldwide. That is an incredibly small number for a company that does know a thing or two about mass production.

So the Corvette ZR-1 should be dismissed because Chevy also builds the Aveo? So what if it is a Toyota? What a ridiculous reason to dismiss this car out of hand. There are plenty of valid reasons to not like the car on its own merits. Pick one of those.

@scratchy
Man, I am really glad you added the 10 NHL players to your rogue’s gallery. I was beginning to notice a disturbing, and hopefully inadvertent, trend to your list.

krugeri–
chevy does not have a corvette for lease that cost $240,000. If this toyodaa was $100,000 it would be a deal. Just like the ZR-1 is a deal for that price.

C’mon, alsvw. Now you’re just trying to walk back your earlier dismissive comment. If your old reasoning had stayed focused on the price I would have agreed with your new reasoning. In fact your earlier comment ended with “But, its a freaking toyota. And that equals granny autos, and crappy trucks. Not supercars.” That comment conveys more an issue with “toyodaa” than the price.

Am I wrong?

So again I ask if the Corvette ZR-1 should be dismissed because Chevy also builds the Aveo?

If the corvette is dismissed. Its because of its crappy cheap interior. Not because chevy makes crappy little aveo’s.

Crappy cheap interiors? When’s the last time you were in a Vette, 1973?

Regarding the price of the LFA, you do know that most companies (outside of Apple) complete fairly sophisticated market analysis when introducing new products, right? Now, I’m not saying it is the right price point for this car but Toyota is pretty sure folks will pony up a lot of loot for this car. We’ll see whether they are right or you are. Personally, I think they are off the mark for a number of reasons, not just because it’s a Toyota.

Haha, Sounds like alot of bloggers are envious of rappers, NHL, NBA and NFL players. Well I’m excited for LEXUS and Toyota’s racing development. If any car complany that can create a supercar with there years and years of racing experience (Twin Turbo Supra, Celica Rally car) in the feild it’s Toyota . They are the #1 car company in the world.
You “Toyoda haters” need a cup of Shut The * Up. The LFA is not a Yaris at all or even a 88 Camry which you still see on the road today running with original parts. You Nay Sayers aren’t calling Lamboghinis, Bugattis, Bentleys, Audis and Porsches (soon to be partner) VW Bugs are you? All are parented by VW.
One thing is for sure its probably worth the price because all the other supercars get you with that repair bill. This is when Toyota stands proud and laughs at the others with a “You Funny Guy” smile. As Darn near every other supercar manufacturer has been bought by someone else. Time for some stablility in the supercar work instead of wondering who will own Lambo, Ferrari or McLaren next. Being a Lexus dealer in every major city provides convienient repair. Repair a supercar you ask? Never know when those ponzi scams come up and you lost dough because repo at that level is no joke!

They really should produce more than 500 of these. If Lamborghini sells $350,000 cars in numbers greater than 500 then Toyota ought to realize it has YET to be compared even to Lamborghini as a supercar manufacturer.

Great car but had I the money I wouldn’t be interested in playing the markup game and bidding game for an LF-A. If I wanted to do that I’d go looking for a rare Ferrari.

Although I am glad this thing has come to pass, The price and the selling technique behind it sounds a bit like something Apple would do if they sold cars. If i purchase a supercar, i want to buy it outright and have it in the garage for weekend cruising and get aways. I don’t want to pay monthly on something and not truly enjoy it on a regular basis, i.e. everyday driving. But 150 sounds fair enough to start off with.

leftwingagenda,

No… this is a tremendously amazing car. It’s worth the money. I just do not understand why Toyota insists on making ONLY 500 of them even if production is 20 per month. If your history as a manufacturer is to focus purely on very limited runs of each supercar model and you only produce those types of cars then I can see the exclusivity of 500 or less cars as being justified.

Toyota has/is proving they can make a brilliant supercar well worth its price with the LF-A. They should just keep making them because at the moment a $25k 086A/FT-86 and very iffy hybrid “Supra” don’t emphasize that Toyota is committed to cars people love to drive as well as cars that are environmentally and financially responsible.

@ trdmugen, very funny , it;s like you really mean it.

@ Hyperion, the only way to justify that price is the car’s limited edition, just like how Alfa Romeo did with the 8C. do you think someone would pay that kind of money for a Toyota if the car wasn’t a limited run ?

@ DrFill , just curious , do you think you are a poet , or why do you write like that ?
