Leftlane has been tracking the developments surrounding Onstar’s proposed changes to its Terms of Service, including a recent request by a Senator to investigate the company – but now General Motors’ premium telematic service provider has reversed its course.
OnStar announced today that it will not change its ToS to allow it to collect a data connection to customer’s vehicles after their OnStar service has been canceled, leaving the collection to current customers only.
“We realize that our proposed amendments did not satisfy our subscribers,†OnStar president Linda Marshall said. “This is why we are leaving the decision in our customers’ hands. We listened, we responded and we hope to maintain the trust of our more than 6 million customers.â€
While this change will likely at least help to pacify the complaints, it will take time to see if the changes will be enough to satisfy those who found the data mining and selling to be an invasion of privacy regardless of the OnStar account being active or closed.
OnStar also clarified that should it ever offer the option for a data connection after cancellation in the future it will allow customers to opt-in, rather than have to opt-out.
