The XTS sedan may soon get bumped from its position as Cadillac's flagship model, but the big four-door could wind up as a range-topper for one of General Motors' other car divisions.

According to a new report by Germany's Auto News, the XTS may wind up as the basis for an Opel flagship vehicle. The XTS would reportedly be branded as the Omega, which has served as the nameplate for past Opel flagships.

Although a seemingly odd pairing, bankruptcy documents indicate the Opel Omega might have started out life as a Saab. Prior to Saab's closing, GM was working on a range-topping sedan for the Swedish automaker under the 9-8 moniker thought to be based on the Cadillac XTS. However, those plans were dashed when the Detroit-based automaker was forced to shutter Saab, leaving a nearly completed design hanging in the balance.

Opel has apparently laid claim to the defunct 9-8 and is now reworking it to become the Omega. Like the XTS the Omega will come standard with front-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive will be on offer. GM's 3.6L V6 is certainly one possible powerplant for the Omega, but the automaker could opt to use its 325 horsepower 2.8L V6 to differentiate the car from its Cadillac counterpart. A range of diesel engines are also on the table.

GM isn't commenting on the possibility of a range-topping Opel, but evidence suggests the car could be ready for a market launch as early as next year.
