We reported yesterday that Lincoln Town Car sales were up a staggering 103 percent during the month of May, and it looks as though the Panther-based land yacht has started out June with a “bang” – although probably not the kind one Lincoln-Mercury dealer was hoping for.
An elderly gentleman and his wife entered the Lincoln-Mercury store in search of a new Lincoln Town car. After finding one that fit the bill, the couple and a salesman hopped into plush four-door for a test drive around the block.
The elderly man slowly backed the Town Car out of its parking spot before slipping it into drive. However, instead of placing his foot on the brake pedal, the man unknowingly had his right foot firmly planted on the go-fast pedal.
Lincoln ’s Web site states the Town Car’s 239 horsepower V8 has “abundant acceleration and power”, with the results fully backing that claim. The elderly man reportedly covered most of the dealership’s parking lot in no time – with a few stretches traversed completely sideways — before hitting speeds close to 75 mph. The sales man eventually kicked the man’s foot of the accelerator, but it was already too late.
The Town Car barreled into a Mercury Cougar before smashing into an Isuzu Rodeo which subsequently hit and flipped the Kia SUV sitting next to it. Needless to say, the $50,000 Town Car – which had four miles on the clock – was completely destroyed.
Thankfully no life-threatening injuries were reported, although we’d hate to be the ones to inform the three clients that the cars they brought in for service were completely totaled.
