Penske to plant trees in honor of each Smart sold

04/01/2009, 8:56 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Penske Automotive Group, Inc., says it will plant one tree for each Smart Fortwo sold in the United States last year in order to celebrate the distributor’s one-year anniversary. Penske, owned by the auto-racing legend Roger Penske, is the sole distributor for Smart Fortwos in the U.S.

The distributor will partner up with Daimler Financial Services and American Forests to plant 24,622 trees in the Cache River State Natural Area in southern Illinois. The Natural Area is located about 150 miles outside of St. Louis.

Penske says it plans to continue the tradition every year to commemorate the number of Smarts sold the year before.

They’ve been selling these cars for 4 years now in Canada, why are we so behind with the times? I also thought these things would be sold through Mercedes dealerships. I was in Montreal just a week ago and every Mercedes dealer I drove by also had Smarts in the showroom. In Canada they also got a Brabus version of the Smart car!! Looks very cool.

It would have been a better idea to plant the trees in the Smart cars.

I think this is a very nice gesture to keep up the company’s eco-chic image. Good PR for them. I am sure they get a tax write-off in form of carbon offsets for this though.
