At the Geneva Motor show, Peugeot took to the stage with a conservative but still attractive concept car designed to signal the future design direction of the French automaker’s lineup. As its name implies, the four-door sedan would wind up gunning for the similarly-sized BMW 5-Series – albeit at a lower price point and with fewer range-topping options, if history is any indication.
Inspired by the Peugeot SR1 concept car, the “5 by Peugeot†features an aggressive look, highlighted by the car’s LED headlights. The “5 by Peugeot†sports a unique front grille treatment, giving it the illusion of being suspended in front of the car.
Beveled brushed-aluminum window surrounds and door handles help the car’s lines flow rearward, culminating in a rear end that “suggests both robustness and power.†Three-bar taillights are intended as a throwback to past Peugeot models. The car’s overall look is kept planted by a set of unique 19-inch wheels.
Underhood, the “5 by Peugeot†uses Peugeot’s latest HYbrid4 technology. The “5 by Peugeot†uses a 2.0 liter HDi FAP 163-horsepower diesel engine to power its front wheels while a 37 horsepower electric motor powers the wheels at the back. The electric motor is designed to aid in low speed operation, but also switches on when all-wheel drive is needed. The combined result is a rating of 74.3 mpg and just 99 g/km of CO2.
