Like the 3008 and the RHX before it, the 508 HYbrid4 mixes a 163 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder HDi turbodiesel with a 37 horsepower electric motor that is mounted right on the rear axle.
The driver can pick between four different driving modes: Auto, ZEV, Sport, and 4WD. In ZEV mode the 508 can cruise for a little over a mile using only its electric motor.
Peugeot claims that the 508 HYbrid4 returns 65.5 miles per gallon in a mixed European cycle, which is very different from the way the EPA rates cars. It emits just 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer, an amount that is about on par with the emissions of the French automaker's pint-sized 107 city-dweller.
Aesthetically speaking, the biggest change between the HYbrid4 and the standard 508 is a discreet badge mounted on the grille. Everything else stays roughly the same.
On the inside, the hybrid 508 stands apart from the rest of the lineup thanks to its smaller trunk, a sacrifice made necessary by the adoption of the electric motor.
The 508 HYbrid4 is scheduled to hit showrooms across Europe over the next few days. In its home country it will carry a base price of €39,200, which converts to about $49,200.
