First MINI engine was partnership of BMW and Chrysler and built out of Brazil. This is a great move for Bimmer and Benz as it gives them cheaper access for the smaller 4-cylinder powerplants found in the 116 and 316, they should work on diesels together too. The 1.8 engines and even 2.0 cannot be far behind.

These alliances are important to maintain BMWs independence, they reduce risk.

Sport, you are correct. The fist places were pretty much scooped by BMW for 2007. That does not tell the whole story, as Toyota and Honda received a large number second and third places. I personally was not aware of those awards and out of curiosity peeked into past years. As it happens, most of those engines are 2-3 years old (or even more). Based on what I've seen Japanese manufactures received first and second places competing in the same category against same European engines in previous years.

I don't doubt that BMW and Mercedes excellent engine manufacturers: they have over quarter century experience between both of them. Honda is building cars less then fifty years and Toyota a bit longer. My point is that they closing the gap working independently with mostly internal resources.

Got Handling?, PSA & Toyota using the same factory to produce cars for Europe based on Toyota platform. Same arrangement as between Toyota and GM in CA. They are not building Luminas in CA.

@Got Handling?

That will be the socalled 'Prince engine', which is developed by BMW and the PSA corporation. I don't see Mercedes partnering with BMW that easily though.

Snooty Europeans being creamed by Japs. Does anyone hear anything about Honda or Toyota partnering to develop an engine? They crank them out like cup cakes.
Tiny Honda in US market had 3 v6's last season: 3.0L in Accord, 3.2L in TL and 3.5L everywhere from truck to RL to Saturn Vue Red Line. On top of it they all were different.
Toyota produced engines for Toyota and for Lotus and God knows for whom else. Since Renault bought into Nissan you don't read about them looking for partner to develop anything.
