Peugeot opens orders for all-electric i0n city car

11/16/2009, 10:33 AM

By Drew Johnson

Peugeot has officially begun taking pre-orders for its zero-emissions i0n electric car. Introduced to the public at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the i0n electric vehicle will launch towards the latter part of 2010.

Peugeot has already offered the i0n to businesses and local authorities across Europe, with the latest offering set to entice private buyers. The i0n will also be available through a number of car-sharing programs across Europe.

Based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the Peugeot i0n is designed for busy urban areas. Its compact length of 3.48 meters allows for a turning radius of just 4.5 meters, yet the i0n offers seating for four. Power for the i0n is provided by an electric motor generating 64 horsepower and 133 lb-ft of torque, with a lithium-ion battery pack supplying the juice. Peugeot says the i0n has a range on 80 miles with a full recharge taking six hours. An 80 percent charge can be completed in just thirty minutes via a fast charging system. The i0n’s top speed is 80mph.

Pricing has yet to be announced but the i0n will carry ABS, ESP, traction control, six air bags, power windows and air conditioning as standard features.

Based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV??? It IS the Mitsubishi i-MiEV! This isn’t badge engineering, they just swapped the badges…

I bet you this will cost less than $25,000; would you buy this or the yet to be produced Chevy Volt? For $40,000 plus? If this comes stateside and the Nissan Leaf is launched soon, GM will have some “splaining” to do Lucy!

This isn’t badge engineering. PSA/Citroen has been buying Mitsubishi designs for a few years now, producing and selling them in Europe. In Japan Nissan is selling Suzuki designed micro cars. Badge engineering is for a company to sell the same car through different divisions with different price points: fishing for dumber buyer. The most blatant example was of course Cadillac Cimaron, when product manager explained the difference between Chevy and Caddy as $5 grand. Ford did not fall far apart with Mercury division and Toyota does sell ES which isn’t all that different then Camry V6.

I think it will sell. There is not much distance to cover in traffic of any Euopean city and when this thingy sits in traffic it does NOT burn electricity.

Do these metro mini cars all have to have the ‘aero’ look?

They can’t possibly go fast enough to warrant any special drag coefficient specs, so quit making them so friggin ugly.
