Peugeot to premiere diesel hybrid 308

08/08/2007, 11:26 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Peugeot will buck the hybrid trend by premiering a diesel-electric hybrid at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, rather than a gasoline-electric hybrid. Peugeot will showcase the technology on its new 308 hatchback. By combining an already efficient diesel engine with the hybrid technology, the vehicle is expected to average 69 mpg on the European combined cycle.

The 308 Hybrid HDi will feature low carbon dioxide emissions of merely 90g/km, according to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport. The 308 Hybrid HDi is powered by a 1.6-liter four cylinder with 109 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor puts out an additional 22 horsepower.

The hybrid will be in production in time for the ‘10 model year.

I called it months ago. I didn’t figure it would be Peugeot, but subs have been diesel-electrics for decades.

only a matter of time before the toyota-philes log on saying that they stole the technology from the green machine Toyota… haahaaha

Maybe toyota can steal some ideas from the French in how to make a car that is fuel efficient AND good looking.

Nice to see a diesel hybrid. I wonder how close to “real world” that 69 mpg really is.

Jackjim – The one major difference between submarines and this car, the sub always runs on electric. The Chevy Volt so far will be the first car to employ that type of system.

Peugeot is practically king of hatchbacks. Or at least France is.

It’s about time somebody came out with an idea like this. I’d like to see diesel hybrids sold in America, not only would they overcome emissions, they wouldn’t be under unnecessary ridicule for being “foggy”.

It’ll never sell because it looks good and therefore does not make a social statement.

Well … it’ll never sell to the eco-poseurs currently gobbling up Priuses, but I’d buy this Peugeot in a heartbeat if it were here.

Now that’s a xxxxing GREAT car. Economical and looks good too. And the torque is respectable. Well done.

jJay: they should sell it here, but is Peugeot ready to start a dealer network?
