Peugeot to sell 408 sedan in America?

07/05/2007, 6:48 AM

By Nick

French automaker Peugeot could end up selling its new 408 sedan in the United States later this decade, according to Motor Trend. Apparently, the company is in talks with Mitsubishi to build the midsize sedan in its underutilized Normal, Illinois, plant.

Peugeot plans to sell the 408 — a successor to the 407 (pictured) — in South America. While a North American plant brings production closer to the car’s intended destination, there might be more to the move.

The report speculates that Peugeot would also sell the car in America — the world’s largest car market — since it would be built here. Of course, certain obstacles — including French-U.S. relations — stand in the way, but time will tell.

Another theory is Mitsubishi will market a re-badged 408 as a successor to the Galant.

The Peugeot 408 isn’t a bad car what is it. Compared to Toyota or Honda though it is junk. My uncle has one. He tells me that many people ask him about the reliability which has had very few problems in the three years of ownership. Go figure.

In the U.S., boring sedans like the Camry and Accord reign supreme. Even in Europe, I have friends that think the larger Peugeot sedans are too quirky and weird for their tastes. I can imagine how poorly it’s going to do stateside.

It would be interesting to have Peugeot back in America… some people might be interested since it’s different from the traditional Accord, Camry, Malibu, etc but in this crowded North American mid-size market, it might be tough for them to have decent sales figures. In terms of quality and reliability, I heard mix reviews.

The present day 407 is good, solid car, though I wouldn’t buy one, since I’m not a fan iof Pug’s styling, I thonk that Peugeot is the of the 3 frenh makers the one that could sell better in the States, since it has the most conservative styling and less reliability issues, though I’d rather take one revolutionary Citröen over one, they both belong to same parente company as well.

Im from the UK & the only thing consistent about french cars are their ability to be the guaranteed bottom slot of each reliability survey. According to Autocar, Car, Auto express, Evo and top gear magazines they are the most unrealiable cars.

IN MY OPINION THEY ARE BY FAR THE UGLIEST. Trust me wait for an Alfa Romeo or stick to buying japanese

I’d like to see Citroen here… those are cool cars. Look at the C4.
Problem with European cars… more expensive to fix?
But they are more comfortable than Japanese cars (which isn’t saying much)
Try to find height adjustable passenger seat in a regular Japanese car…you won’t.

First Alfa, now Peugeot? YES! I just spent 2 weeks in Europe and I’ve now got a new found appreciation and love for European cars that we don’t get over here. I really wish Citroen would come over, but they make far too quirky cars to appeal to the U.S. market, though I do find them innovative and quite cool. Please bring Renault, Peugeot, Alfa, etc all over here!

If that were tru, peuguet couldn’t stay in business

I imagine this is a decent car, but there’s a reason French automakers left.

Peugeot’s biggest sales obviously come from France, but I don’t know about America. They are excellent value for money, being a lot better than you think they are. For 16000 dollars you can get a fully-and I mean fully, top of the range everything-specced 406 from 2004. A good bargain.

The handling on most Peugeots is great as well…

peugeots are becoming gorgeous cars, and this new generation is evidence that the once ailing brand can make it over here. Now if Ghosn would bring us Renault as well maybe a little competition could be stirred between the two.

LamboZ – One has to ask, why in hell did you come back?

Peugeots as well as Renaults were both sold here at one time. They were so notorious for poor quality, they barely could give them away. Considering the south is still fighting the civil war, old “opinions” die hard. It will take some time before we start seeing dealerships popping up.

If I wouldn’t want a Mitsubishi in the first place why on earth would I want a French branded one? I also couldn’t see Mitsu agreeing to give themselves more competition . Plus the fact that Mitsu has a much more positive brand recognition than a french namepate. Also, if this car did turn out with poor reliability then wouldn’t some of the blame fall on Mitsubishi?

LamborghiniZ, very true. Which is why you don’t see Cadillacs in Europe. Same thing goes for Peugeot. Won’t sell here, it’ll be a cold day in hell when an American family buys a Peugeot (if they can pronounce it) instead of a Camry, Accord or Malibu. The Japanese automakers alone will crush the French competition here, no questions.

Racial slurs aside, Peugeot’s coupes are nice cars but their reliability is comparable to the Chinese cars. I had about 45 units of the 406’s, so I know damn well how crappy those things are!

Some of the comments left here are SHOCKING in the level of ignorance they promote. So I think its time to address the elephant in the room that is the fact that America produces some godawful piles of **** too. I’d just like a moment of your time to let you have a piece of my mind, given my European sensibilities. Come to Europe and see how many American cars you can see on our roads. You might be surprised to learn that you won’t find many. Why are there so few? Because American cars have a piss poor reliability record in Europe. For generations they have been ugly, poorly built, heavy, excessively thirsty, over styled and under engineered. They take up too much space, the wander on the road, they have poor handling and they fall apart after just a few years of motoring. Even the cars that America claims are world class (Ford Mustang) are generations behind Europe in terms of dynamics (Mustang has a live axle rear suspension system!) European car buyers are more discerning than American car buyers and as such we won’t pay for the crap that American consumers will. We demand better. Thats why Cadillac are still trying to successfully relaunch in Europe having started the process back in the mid 90’s. No one here with a clue about cars really cares for American motors. Chrysler sell a handful of 300C’s which is understandable, they look good and are basically built on an old Mercedes platform anyway. The interior however is horrific. Chrysler sell more than a few Voyagers, but to people who are blind or completely socially retarded… I think. Dodge is a laughing stock because everything they build is a rebadged Chrysler p.o.s. and they somehow manage to make them even more crap, again especially the interiors. Where do they get that plastic? Buick are nowhere to be seen, ditto Pontiac. Jeep are a total waste of road space, each one looking like a more retarded caricature of another because they have run out of styling ideas as well as money. What else is there? Chevrolet here are rebadged Korean Daewoos, so there goes the kudos of that brand in this market. Saturns are rebadged version of Opel/Vauxhall cars and I don’t know about in the USA but here those cars are highly respected and reliable. Embarrassed yet? Feeling foolish? Say what you will about European cars but we will sit smugly on our side of the pond and reflect upon the naivety of the American nation and pity them for having to endure what they do. I feel sorry for the average car buying American who has to choose from a super expensive European import, a ****ty domestic “stack-em-high-sell-em-cheap” model , or a Japanese car so magnolia that it makes the Koreans look exciting. Why do I pity them? Because in Europe if we can’t afford a BMW or Mercedes we actually have lower priced and (perceived) less prestigious brands to choose from which won’t blind us with hideous styling, bore us to death with mundanity or fall apart around our ears. Jealous? You should be. I drive an Alfa Romeo and its an absolutely fantastic car for the money. You should try one. Oh wait,… you can’t.
