Peugeot/Citroen, Mitsubishi to collaborate on EV

09/04/2009, 8:57 AM

By Andrew Ganz

French automaker PSA Peugeot Citroen and Japanese automaker Mitsubishi made a joint announcement yesterday that they intend to launch an electric car in Europe together by the end of 2010. Based on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV EV, which was launched earlier this year in Japan, the model will be offered in both Peugeot and Citroen variants in Europe.

PSA will announce more specific details on its plans for the EV later this month – most likely at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The automaker said it hopes to sell about 25,000 annually in Europe. Mitsubishi also intends to market about 25,000 i-MiEVs in Japan and elsewhere.

PSA spokesman Jean-Marc Sarret said that the car will be capable of a roughly 80-mile range between charges, which will take about six hours each.

Mitsubishi ought to bring it to the US so something besides the Lancer range is interesting…

Maybe Mitsubishi should just be worried about staying in business and putting out something besides the Lancer? Their models weren’t competitive new, now they just are jokes – and it’s not even funny anymore.

PSA is already selling Mitsuboshi based CUV. I can see BMW joining the party eventually.

It’s a cute little car. With some help from the French it can be a good case.
