How do they make a perfect car better? I don’t know, but they did. Awsome. But yeah.. I was never crazy about those rims.

This 722 version is what the SLR should’ve been all along as a base model. But I give them credit as this is finally one bad ass car now. Too bad they couldnt boost the HP to 722 to match the Starting Time of the race though…

I like this version, however, as much as i would have liked them just to have produced this model as there base model, i think the base SLR is a true MB, this is to stripped down for them to have released this as the original SLR, to put it blatenly, it’s to racey to be a MB. Personally, i believe the oringal SLR fit into the MB line-up perfectly, i think had they used this car as there SLR model, it would have been more of a flop then the SLR already is. Obviously, people such as those who view this site, and are real car enthusiats, would much rather have the 722 version, however, thinking of the typical MB buyer, especially those of the higher end 100K plus, AMG type, MB’s, those people aren’t people who would enjoy a car like this. I think they were very wise to build this car however, considering they probably will sell many to real car drivers and enthusiasts.

I’ve heard the SLR has only sold about 1500 of something like 4500 cars the’re contract required them to build.

A. it sounds like a major flop, even as cool as a car i and most people think it is

B. doesn’t it seem like MB over estimated the popularity of this car, 4500 (that might not be the correct number, i remember something around there) seems like a **** load of cars at this price level to try to sell, especially for a company that doesn’t tend to sell in these waters very often, usually staying in the 50-150K range. then again, that could be part of the reason they had thought it would sell so well, anybody have an explantion to y MB would expect this kinda sales? or does that sound pretty reasonable to u guys?

Purely from an asthetic point of vire, the picture from the top of the car, looking down, with the engine bay exposed is amazing. I never realized how complicated the hood mounts were. Kudos to both the Mercedes-Benz (and McLaren) engineers, and to the photographer.

Regardless of performance, the car is way too expensive for a MB. They should’ve just take it to another level and stick Maybach on it even if the image doesn’t fit, at least the majority of buyers would give it a second look from a Ferrari or Lambo. Or do the Audi branding strategy with Lambo and Bugatti…

Veda — sort of a response to you — Maybach has a concept called the Exelero (Google it if you haven’t heard of it yet).
If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would have a down payment on that car in a second.

Oh wait…….. nevermind.

thing2, the only vehicles that appeal to those people are cadillacs and hummers, you should know that by now. as for this beauty, this is for REAL car people, not those posers you see on mtv cribs, who just buy cars and slap on some gaudy big rims to show off to the norms like us.

This is a good looking article to end the day with. At least i’m not looking at a passenger car or some bloated concept car everytime I check LLN.

Oh I know about the Exelero but a concept is a concept, until I see it goes to production the SLR is just too out of place similar to how the NSX was, which was even too much for Acura.

For all the knocking I’ve been giving DaimlerChrysler, I admit this is one hell of a vehicle. It’s good to see they still have what it takes to produce an awesome car. :-)

The contract states that over a seven year period Mclaren cars has to build 500 cars a year. In total 3500cars will be built and they must include the special editions and cabriolets which is due soon. To date around 2000 have been sold over a 2-3 year period which means its exceeded targets and thats even without the cabriolet. Well done to Mclaren and Mercedes-Benz

I believe the sonme of the reasons The SLR wasn’t a Major Hit was because MB Screwed itself. It came out with SLR Concept then released SL, which has similar looks and Costed less. Then said it would produce SLR. Also as someone stated 4500 seems like alot. I would think someone interested in this luxury sportscar wants exclusivity.
The wheels look pretty plain. Should have more Depth.

Everything you read is about perception. It just takes one auto journalist to state “SLR turns out to be a sales flop with only 1500 units sold out of a contracted 4500 vehicles for release.” Wait, the last time I checked the 4500 sales projection was not to be over a 2 to 3 year period. The Mclaren Plant can’t even produce that many in that time frame. I beleive Mclaren Mercedes intended to allocate a estimated 500 SLR’s a year give or take on demand over a 6 to 7 year period. This makes sense and has the compamny some what on track for 4500 shipments based on this info. As for the price tag it is high water for all serious Dupont Registry brands. Stacking $450,000 plus amx for 4 wheels is more money than all current Royce’s, Bents, Ferarri’s, Lambo’s, Astons, and other favourites. To have a full understanding of what Benz can fetch for a car check out my comments on the rumoured Mercedes mid-engine project posting.Remember a cabrio and the 722 should help finish the SLR order.
