Pininfarina-designed Rolls-Royce Hyperion officially unveiled

08/19/2008, 1:35 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Italian automotive design house that has, most recently, penned the Ferrari California, unveiled a custom-bodied car over the weekend that it has built for a wealthy collector. Based on the chassis and mechanicals of the Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, the car is dubbed the Hyperion.

The last time Pinninfarina undertook a similar project was with the Enzo-based P4/5 back in 2006.

Powering the Hyperion will be the same 6.75-liter V12 engine found under the expansive hood of the Drophead Coupe, which makes 453 horsepower and 531lb-ft of torque.

The car draws on styling cues from pre-war era cars, so lots of curves are part of the Hyperion package. The Hyperion was unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours in California earlier this week, and will be shown in Paris at the Mondial de l’Automobile show in October.

Yeah, the headlights are a miss for me, as is the A-pillar and quarterlights. Otherwise, it’s stunning.

Ummmm. Ya. Well, many adjectives come to mind. “Beautiful” isn’t one of them. Does the world’s appetite for expensive and ugly cars (Maybach) never end? This poor thing is a pastiche of so many different things it hardly qualifies as a Rolls Royce.

The front of a Phantom, mixed with the middle of a Z4, and the butt of a Lexus SC. Yuck.

The front of this car, with the headlight’s, the air vent at the bottom of the grille etc. makes it look like the face of that big grouchy @$$ turtle from the Never Ending Story.

I actually think it’s really good looking. Aside from the top up, which looks a little awkward since the vehicle is so large.

Most Pinn cars are horrible but this is very nice, after I get done whoreing out TugJob and Cracker’s moms on the corner i’ll buy one and raffle it off on this site, wish me luck.

Oh my good god no! Thank goodness they already make a drop dead gorgeous drop-top for people with taste.
Next time I’m volunteering at the shelter, telling TugJob’s crack baby brothers and sisters the ‘”Emperor’s New Clothes” story, it won’t be about , I’ll be substituting the rapper and the British/German car company for the Emperor and his tailor.

Uuuuuu, ouch. The undisputed king of the melted bar of soap designs. Horrible, I think. Crosseyes front AND rear. There isn’t one angle that I like about this car. Maybe the one image where you only see the top/hood cover in beautiful wood and the interior is most likely beautiful, but the exterior is horrible. The profile is hideous, the scale of that tiny top against all of those body lines and sloping rear and front and top and grille and…bbbbbbbb… Nope, no sir, don’t like it. Don’t like it at all.

C6, you are probably right, it’s probably super nice in person, but just from looking at these photos, I would guess that it’s from a 1st year design student’s portfolio of work.

I actually really like the design of most of this car, except for the hideous grille. Why? The slimmer, less-flash/more-class grilles of the older RR’s are way more fitting.
