Some of Italian design house Pininfarina’s best-known designs have been Alfa Romeo Spiders – particularly the 1966 Duetto that carried over with relatively few changes for nearly 30 years – so it comes as no surprise that the firm plans to exhibit a new Spider show car for the Geneva Motor Show in March.
The design is planned to celebrate Alfa Romeo’s 100th anniversary and Pininfarina’s 80th, but it comes at a time when both companies’ futures are up in the air. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that Alfa Romeo must prove that it has market potential, and Pininfarina has long suffered dwindling automotive design business.

The two seat Spider represents an “innovative vision of an antique theme strongly present in the Pininfarina roots,” according to the company.

So far, Pininfarina has released only a very small sketch.
